If you want slipknot distortion, just get your money, and buy some good music with it, then save up and by a good tube amp :P
On a more serious note, from what i've read on here, stay away from the 'ValveState' style amps. But you've probably noticed that too.
I hear that Killswitch Engage use Framus Cobras or Dragons (can't remember off hand which), it shouldn't be hard at all to find Slayers rigs, im not a huge fan so i can't guide you on that one

Decent distortion + cheap = 5150, plain and simple. Best sound you can get for like 500-600 bucks.

The Rivera Knucklehead is a kickass amp, but the price will kick your ass as well.

I'm with Metal Thrashing Mad on this one ... 5150. Quite simply. If you decide to go solid-state ( your tastes will develop, and you'll see the objective advantages and disadvantages of both, your taste will determine which you should use to suit your wants and needs ) try something from Tech 21 or Randall. My overall verdict is that for a serious "first" amplifier, there's nothing better than the 5150.

i originally thought the 5150/5150II was awesome, but over time, after listening to bands who use them, i find them somewhat grainy. but i've never actually tried it myself. so...i guess im gonna have to do that before i dismiss it

Yes, yes ... and don't let any store employee fool you into thinking the 5150 II has more gain simply because of the "II" to get you to pay more ... the 5150 actually has a bit more gain. The combos and the heads are two entirely different amplifiers, one is brighter than the other ... Right now Randall's are going for very low prices, there's a Vmax on E-bay right now at 600$ buy-it-now with free shipping. Everynow and then an amplifier called an Ampeg VH-140 sells on E-bay. If you see one do your best to obtain it ... listen to Dying Fetus and you'll see the merits of it.

It all has to do with your settings, tubes, and bias.
Arch Enemy is the perfect stock 5150 tone IMO.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...7314843120&rd=1 I just got this off ebay...basically same amp as the Vh-140c, sounds great....$278.00 to my door. Nails the Dying Fetus tone, and is great for thrash/Gothenburg style. has a clear distinct tone and more than enough distortion. I primarily use it for tech death/grind. Also has an awesome clean. Don't think just because it's solid state it sounds crappy, this amp is one of the best sounding amps I've played through for metal....and it sounds really good for really clean stuff like jazz or country (yeah I get bored sometimes ) Search ebay under Ampeg ss-140c, vh-140c, ss-150, vh-150, these are all similar amps, the "c" models happen to have chorus, the others don't. The SS series is the early model, the VH is basically just like the SS, but the circuitry is modified to make the amp more tubelike in sound, and later models have a different chassis.
Ok....sorry for the Ampeg rant..... everyone sets up 5150s differently...but I can see the grainyness.......every one I've heard in person that I remember has this "dry" sound to it, but then again, all the bands I've seen live with it I remember were local metalcore bands (Central New York state is metalcore hell).
Another good option may be selecting components, like having a separate rackmounted premap and poweramp...

There was this tube Ampeg for sale around here called VL1001 (I reckon) and it was one of the amps designed by Lee Jackson, it looked pretty fucking sweet.
