Instrument cables: Mainline vs. Monster Cable
Mainline's cables are much cheaper than Monster's, but I'm not sure if Monster is of much better quality or if they just sound the same. Can anybody with experience comment on cable brands? Feel free to reccomend another brand, I'm willing to spend $15 or $20 on anything 8 feet or longer as long as it's of good quality. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Sound is not really the issue. More expensive cables are typically superior from a mechanical standpoint and are less likely to fail. Spending the extra cash for one of the cables with a lifetime guarantee is worth it IMO.

yea monster cable is gr1m, one cable investment you never have to worry about getting a new cable if that one breaks, lifetime warrenty no questions asked.

monster cables are nothing special.... sure they have warranty, but really great cables shouldnt need it.
mogami cabling is the way to go. i like switchcraft right angled end's for holding rack shit and pedalboards together. then neutriks for my main cord from my guitar.
i make them myself too, not to hard if you have basic soldering skills. and alot cheaper than buying them from guitar center. i could make and sell a custom length mogami cable with neutrik ends for about half of what guitar center does and still make a little profit.

it'd be spam if i said "i have some cables for sale"
but i just said i could make, and sell them for half of guitar center's prices and still make profit.
i was mostly hinting that cables are often overpriced.

i usually use mogami 2524... though i could use others if requested(its cheaper to buy in bulk though). but i find the 2524 to be extremely noiseless and pure in tone & clarity.
for end's, as i said before. for most stuff i use switchcraft right angled ends. but on my main instrument cords i use neutriks.
i just use plain ol' solder with a simple 15w soldering iron.
and i cut to custom lengths.

hmm, how much would it cost for 2 of your best cables?
i need one thats for my guitar to my cry baby (that would have to be about 3m)
and then i need one going from my cry baby to my soon to be pod xt (less than a metre would be fine)
i dunno anything about the technical side of cables, but yea what are the best ones for my needs and how much could you make them for?
cheers

i'm guessing since you're talking in meters and not in feet that you're not in the u.s.
and if that's the case you're better off buying a bit more locally.
if not shoot me a PM and we'll talk.

well, they're not bad cables by any means. totally decent wire with pretty high quality ends. and they're durable. not to mention lifetime warranty.
but they cable and ends themselves are nothing special.
when i was a monster user(i still have couple) the warranty is what sold me on them. i could break it in the most retarded way like trying to tow a freinds car with it.. doesnt matter. take it into guitar center and they'll give you a fresh one.
build quality is about equal with monster and mogami, but in means of sound quality. mogami's with neutriks or switch craft ends are superior.

Well yeh, Monster cables are complete crap.. just really overpriced. Good thing the warrenty is lifetime because I've come across many busted ones. For half the price you can get a much better cable.
So if you rather have a lifetime warrenty with inferior sound then by all means buy monster..

Dude, I do the same thing I can make my own cable for anything really. I get 2524 cable for $0.49/ft and with some $3 Neutriks plugs I build the same cables Guitar Center sells for $43. I use elestronics solder that has a rosin core a some silver in the mix. It cost a bit more for the sliver mix solder but it has a little better conductivity and bonding then just lead/tin solder. You don't have to heat it as much and that makes for a better joint
Guitar cables are a scam when you think about it. They charge so much for them but make them for so cheap.

Totally agreed. The Neutrik speakons that i built only ran me $30 for a 25 ft and a 50ft, where at guitar center it would have cost me $100

Hey xdx, where can I buy the 2524 cable/ + some ends? It looks like if I just bout a spool of 100ft I'd solve a lot of patch problems for a few years.
Also, is it easy to figure out how to solder everything? Or is there some sort of manual I can get? Does it matter what kinda iron i use?

bulk = a shitload.
I guess the ends are what really kill people in the pricing...
Anyone still care to enlighten me on how to solder ends to the cable?
I just might grab $20 worth of mogami (errr...50ish feet?) and use my dad's soldering iron (dunno the wattage though..) and get my own solder (cheap too, i hear) and make my own cables from now in instead of having to buy 'em.
Cheaper rack investments, here i come...

i bet like 30 euros and ull have a shit load of good cables (even spare ones), and if u would buy new i guess ul end up with one cable for the same money, from what ive seen on internet so far.
ive seen some spectraflex cables, with aluminium wiring aound it to make it stronger for walking over it etc. 60 usd for 10 feet how sick is that

ONe question though is sheilding. If you know sheilding (protecting from unwaned frequencies) it helps. I always buy braided.

I am questioning nothing. I am merely stating that I am not a big fan of the spiral sheilding simply because I bought 100ft of it and the noise wouldnt go away. I got 100ft of braided, and granted its a little less flexible, there was no unwanted noise.
Im sorry if I dont make my point clear, my brain scans reveal im not using the normal percentage of my brain.

why did you start your post off with "one question though"?
the mogami 2524 are probably some of the lowest noise cables made. really good stuff.

I probably meant to say, one question to ask yourself is.
And the 2524 I think is the kind i get.
