whats wrong with my hand
1) I DID SEARCH so dont bother me with, search next time asshole, crap
2) if this is in the wrong forum sry, i though its suppose to be here.
oke thing is, last month i was like improving rilli a lot, i was basicaly everyday pushing myself to play 2 necrophagist solos along the songs without slowing em down, but since last week my fingers are slow, they are stiff, and they are like powerless, so i took a few days break but there still the same
what the fuck is wrong?? is this something that i overdid the muscles or sumtin??
HELP!!! this is rilli making em fucking depressive, i cant even do a simple sweep or riff (just stuff i was always be able to do at speed even when i didnt warm up yet)
any suggestions on what might be wrong or what i can do bout it???

It sounds like maybe either. . . hope you don't think I'm retarded for this. . . .
1. You overworked yourself and your hands just don't feel like giving in for a little while. Possibly because you were overworking them with no warm-up.
(solution: practice but nothing to complicated if you practice the sweeps do them slowly as to try to retain any improvement you've made.)
2. If you've been drinking or partying too much it would go away for apparent reasons.
3. You are physically tired. . .maybe not enough to notice it but just enough to screw your shit up.
4. Cease to masturbate so much. . . Despite what people say it can really screw your arm up. . . .
Just messing with you on the first one. Honestly it's probably going to fall under 1 or 3. I'm not a doctor or anything but thats the most common of the two for most people.

damn...that's fucked. Maybe you could try one of those gripmasters to warm up the muscles before you play.

That sucks....cant help you however about 1½ yrs ago I got severe joint pain in my left hand fingers that ceased most of my playing for about 5 weeks....it would come and go but always came when playing.
It worried me horribly up to the point I was considering getting a medical look....but it simply went away as fast as it came and hasnt resurfaced since.
Hope yours does as well too.

i remember i used to feel pain in my left wrist for about 2/3 months, which stopped me playing, so i started warming up for longer and taking cod liver oil tablets and its so much better, no pain, no nothing,
anyways in response i'd say rest ure fretting hand, tone ure playing down a bit, warm up excessively and take it easy. if ure still facing probs, see a doctor or physio

My fingers have a tendency to swell. I couldn't get my wedding rings off right now unless they were sawed off. But the water retention comes and goes.
The idea that you over-worked your hands could be part of it. To build up strength in other parts of your body you have to work the muscles and then let them rest to strengthen otherwise they just don't perform well. It's probably not just your fingers but your arms as well. You might try changing the position of your instrument slightly after you've rested a day or two. Unless it's something other than over-working you should be able to build up your flexibility and dexterity.

A little hand self-massage that's good to get the blood flowing all the way to your fingertips is to face your palm upward and relax it. Take your opposite hand and rub your wrist area with your thumb while the other fingers support the back of your hand. Continue rubbing onto your palm. You'll feel your hand flexing at times. That's fine. Then grasp each finger individually with your thumb and first 2 fingers and slide them all the way to the tips. You should be able to see your fingers change color a bit when you get to the tips. That means you're forcing blood into there. And that's good. It's good for arthritis or just to increase the blood supply to the extremities.
Also, if you crack your knuckles, stop. You're displacing fluid between the joints and that's what's making the pop. As you age you lose that fluid and that's when you have joint problems.
But by all means, if it's really bad, go talk to a doctor.
And let us know when it gets better and how you remedied it. PM me so I know.

The reason why I said that those products could screw your hand up is because they increase strength which increases endurance. . . using them on already screwed up dexterity related things could be disastorous but personally I don't recommend any of those products under any circumstance.

I have read a couple times about warming up....
Isnt simply picking up the guitar and playing warming up?
I assume warming up means to get the flow going well before performing or recording....which DOES make a diff...I know.
But if we're sitting in our rooms jamming for two hours for fun/practice.....we dont need to warm up for that.

i actually warm up before everything i do or play.
but the wierd thing is i dont realise im doing it.
it just happens i pick up the guitar do some scales, sweep's.and what i mean by not actually realising im doing it is because i dont think shall i do scales or shall i play a song it just happens.
dunno about anyone else

Warming up is always good, it isn't necessarily just for getting faster or being able to pull off a riff that you are wanting to play. It's just like stretching before you exercise. You don't want to tear a very vital ligament or anything. That tends to be my view on warming up. Just start easy and take it from there. I usually start playing major modes a little slower so I know I'm not messing up on my picking then I speed up a little then I tend to shift more towards combinations of chords(hendrixian style). Then I tend to move onto more melodic/exotic scales. It has treated me right so far and I've only had minor difficulties but that was back a few years before I started this warm-up. Occasionally I do fatigue in my picking arm when I try something like Paganini's Caprice #5 in A minor. . . but I do it too fast so that would make sense.

my hands getting much better now
the strengt starts to come back so im gonna take it a bit easier for a few days to let it rest.
but like this afternon my hand suddently was like a machine gun, and when it works out for me that i can play fast i do that untill in tired so i guess im to fanatic when im having a good day wich results in overworking the muscles
bout the warming up, i always play kinda relaxed if i just start, i just play some stuff but i dont put much effort and energie in it right away.
anyways, im pretty sure i just overworked it, it didnt hurt it was just stiff and kinda powerless.
awell, i should be fine thanks to everyone trying to help me out and giving em tips, advice etc
EDIT: btw l'b xxx, that massagemethod u described work bloody nice thnx

Dude, I have that same thing happen to me everytime I expand my soloing capabilities. Just take it easy at first, speed is a byproduct as practice and accuracy. Push yourself, but don't kill your hand. I have had the same thing as you happen, and had to wear this stupid wrist brace for a long time just because I would not WARM UP first.
just warm up with some easy solos. Necrophagist is some seriously heavy duty shred.

Whoa... the same thing happened to me a few months ago. My right(picking hand) felt completely powerless, I could barely even do any alternate picking since my hand felt so weak. I also had some difficulty writing. It went away after a few days, I have no idea what it was...

He used to do a ton of heroin, so that fucked his shit up.
Also, I read he had fallen asleep on his arm which damaged the nerves for some reason.

Stretch your fingers out more often. Start off simple when practicing. It should work over time. I don't think it's as bad as "Saturday Night Palsy". Good luck dude.

I found John Petrucci's stretching and warm up exercises (the pre-guitar playing ones) to be really useful. The massaging really helped me, i noticed my fretting hand felt so much more free and faster than before

Take breaks bewtween tries/practicing. Nuff said really, I used to play for 5 hours a night and foudn out masturbating was a problem. Rest & Relaxation is the best part to perfecting practicing dude.(aswell as perfecting on what you can already do...which sometimes means R&R is out of the window, which can be a bad thing)...

somethings happening to my wrist that im worried about. im just learned 'the saddest day' by converge and when i play it, my wrist hurts a bit afterwards, from being bent up the whole time---the song is mostly rapid chording on the lower strings... is this normal? am i just not adjust to fast chord progressions on the lower strings?
