anybody tried one of these puppies? I tried the MF350 yesterday and it fucking blew my head off. The amp distortion was just soo sexy. But i only tried it on one setting and didn't have enough time to dick around with it.

Anybody know if it has enough bang for the buck... right now id like to bang it alll night long....

for the price of a mode 4 you can buy a way nicer amp than that. You can buy a used ENGL half stack or H&K triamp head or even a new ENGL head. Or a used mesa boogie rectifier, a nice peavey head or a crate blue voodoo. Just to name a few great amps. Those will give you more satisfaction than a mode 4...

Just check E-bay.

For the price the MF4 isn't a good amp at all. I would say with it's features that it is only worth $1000. It is the same thing as a Randell V-Max when you compare the two.

All a rectifier does is change an AC voltage sine wave into a DC voltage. The DC voltage kinda looks like rolling hills, depending on how much filtering is involved.

tonaly i think it's usable and considerably good. but the term that comes to mind is "jack of all trades master of none.". but for the price, it's a pile of shit.

Seriously.. sounds awesome, my buddy picked up a halfstack for $400 (with 1960a 4x12) its like half solid half tube preamp.. and full tube poweramp. With a tube screamer in front and a graphic EQ in the loop this thing screams! Im thinking of picking one up.. there so cheap. And its light, like 25 lbs compared to my 60+ lb 5150.. which can be a bitch to move around.

Im really pretty jealous of the deal he got. I never even heard of the amp before he got it.

How about the "new" Fender MetalHead series. . . .is it any good. . . I know it runs a bit of watts, 550 @ 2 ohms and 400 @ 4 ohms, other than that nothing. Thats just what musicians friend says about it though.

You really don't need 300W if you plan on distorting the amp. Lower watt amps distort at much lower volumes. They still get plenty loud, but don't try to play cleans with it at the same volume. The cleans will distort some too very easy with a lower watt rating. Any more questions?

xdx is right to about the Watt/volume ratio too. It is 10:1 Watt/volume. Never fall for that sales pitch. Seems people think more Watts means more distortion but it is the opposite really. More Watts prevents the amps from distorting and makes things more clean. It might give you a small boost in volume as a side effect but more Watts doesn't mean more distortion.

sencond. i don't didicate my life to knowing everything either.. it's common knowledge in the gear world though. wattage isnt tied to volume the way most think of it.

and yes +10db is double the volume... if you knew that why do you make such retarded comments on volume?

if you double the wattage you're increasing volume by 3db(as long as all other variables are the same).

from a 10w amp to a 20w amp = +3db
from that 20w amp to a 40 amp = +3db
from that 40w amp to an 80w amp = +3 db
and then they just round off to 100w and give your self the extra +1 db to make it a total of +10db from the origional sound level.

that's where the x10 times the wattage = x2 the volume estimate comes from.

and soulinsane is right. he's talking abuot headroom. that's where the need fro high wattage amps comes from. when you turn up a power source after a point it "clips" or "distorts"... the more wattage you have the more "headroom" or "amount of volume before breakup point" you'll have.

s.s. amps have a hard ceiling. they hit the clipping point and they distort in a really nasty/harsh/undesired way. tube amps however have alot more usable headroom. not only is the headroom higher on a tube amp of equal wattage to a s.s. amp. but the poweramp distortion is alot smoother, and that's why people like the sound of amps like the jcm 800's when they're dimed. you mix the preamp gain with poweramp overdrive and stressed speakers and the end result is distortion to die for.

and not all amps have the same amount of preamp gain... amps like the mesa stilleto per se are more of a medium gain amp because they don't have a rediculous amount of preamp gain. where as the rectos have become a standard in the high gain world because they have tons of preamp gain.

so the poweramp section of your 900w amp that you "say" you have, and your 45w amp have nothing to do with the power section, it's all in the preamp.

so essentially you have 9.75 dB total... so 10 times the wattage is LESS THAN double the volume.
