I need old 80's thrash and I don't know why...

All I've been really listening to is late 80s/early 90s thrash. Mainly Testament - "The New Order", Annihilator - "Alice in Hell", Vio-Lence - "Eternal Nightmare", Watchtower - "Control and Resistence" and all Athiest albums. I need more, so any recommendations for me? I'd like specific albums also and please don't say anything like Slayer, megadeth, metallica, Exodus, yeah I've heard of all the mainstream ones.

As an old ass '80s thrasher and DJ who has owned or heard pretty much all obscure eighties thrash albums, I can tell you that the following are the only ones I still listen to fairly often these days:

Sacrifice: Forward to Termination (This is my favorite)
Rigor Mortis: Rigor Mortis (second favorite) and sometimes Rigor Mortis vs. the Earth
Testament: The New Order and The Legacy
Sacred Reich: Ignorance
Hallow's Eve: Tales of Terror
Flotsam and Jetsam: No Place for Disgrace and sometimes Doomsday for the Deceiver.
Nasty Savage: Nasty Savage
Bloodfeast: Face Fate and sometimes Chopping Block Blues
Possessed: Seven Churches, Beyond the Gates, and The Eyes of Horror

Then of course Megadeth and Slayer. I don't listen to Anthrax or Metallica anymore. Once in a great while I'll bust out "Feel the Fire" by Overkill.

EDIT: I forgot Forced Entry: Uncertain Future (this album RULES)

I'm not a fan of Exodus myself, but I do listen to Death Angel. Check out The Ultra Violence - thrashiest one IMO - and possibly their newest album because it has some good tracks.

I haven't heard much Coroner, but I have heard that they are (were) very good. I really should check them out myself more.

I won't name any other bands because all that I can think of have already been posted.

That is another album I forgot to list (The Ultraviolence). It's the only one of their albums I still listen to and it rules. Their last tour was very disappointing compared to when I saw them in 1988.

Actually they cancelled their show last Tuesday with Kreator, and Vader cancelled as well

Glad to hear that they would have been dissapointing anyways You suck Kylito, seeing them in the year I was born and all. I wish I was born in 1970 or so, that would have been cool.

Yeah, last tour they only had one cabinet each where I saw them and the scene was pretty lame. The 1988 show was in L.A. and they were at the top of their game and the metal scene was crazy back then. I keep hoping history will repeat itself fully and we'll see some amazing new bands popping up somewhere somehow.

The best part of that Death Angel show in L.A. was when some dude ripped off a rag that was tied around Rob Cavestany's leg and then Rob struck a chord, grabbed the guy by his hair and then kicked him in the face with a steel toed boot, then went back to playing like nothing happened. At the same show someone did a stage dive as the song ended and I could hear his body hit the floor from twenty feet away during the temporary silence.

Yep, the thrash scene got horribly over saturated in the late 1980's, that's partly why it isn't too popular anymore. Too many second-rate Thrash bands being signed, people got tired of them, and were looking for a new kind of music.

Yep. The mid-late 80's saw thrash as a huge success, and from the late 80's to mid 90's, thrash became oversatured with second-rate bands as well as many of the first-rate acts being bastardized by record companies trying to cash in on the phenomena, plus certain bands just plain starting to suck of, apparently, their own volition.

You would never guess in a million years which band branched out from them.

One that might be worth looking up is..

Gothic Slam - A Face In The Crowd

A friend of mine recently put me on to this. I think the drummer was later in Il Nino, but I might be wrong. Also, Xentrix were a British 80s Thrash band with that Bay-Area influence. Try their album "For Whose Advantage".

Oh, and Black Moor is quite good too (Heavy metal with balls mixed with thrash). Check out the song Beyond Hell!
Dude, whe someone asks for 80's thrash, don't say Slayer. That is like if he is looking for a religion and you say something as popular and common as Christianity.

Well, judging by your first reply I'm sure you'll understand that being accused of naming SlaYer whilst being asked for (80's) thrash ís quite... Insulting.

But do check out SlaVer

I'm pretty sure DEAD is finished looking for old thrash, considering this thread is a year and a half old. I'm leaving it open not so people can hit and run with their favorite thrash bands, but for the benefit of new people who might want to ask the same question.

Mandator is a pretty decent band that hasnt so far been mentioned. You should check their album Perfect Progeny out, very Metallica influenced if i remember correctly.

I really suggest Megadeth. They are still a great band and still release great albums. I'd pick up Ruse In Peace, Countdown To Extinction, and Youthanasia.

You should probably just read the posts around for a while to get a better feel for the genre of metal as well as a better feel for the people in this forum. The way things are going right now, the smart people in the forum will be laughing at you, the stupid people in the forum will flame the shit out of you, and you, being 15, will respond in a manner that is likely to get you booted. I'm not telling you what to do, I'm just trying to give you a heads up.

Unbelievable totally underrated band, they just reunited for some live shows. I don't see the Sadus similarities, but they are mandatory to check out if you like technical thrash like Coroner, Believer, Toxik, etc. "Excursion Demise" is their masterpiece, and "Weave The Apocalypse" is more groovy and post-thrash oriented, but still kicks ass. Jacob Hansen is a damn riff MACHINE.

And I have. IMO a definite step down from their previous one due to the album being 90% groove, 5% thrash and 5% semi-technical riffs. That said, I'm still enjoying it at the moment.

Some Thrash I have recently acquired:

Cynic - 1990 Demo
I've only listened to this once, but I could hear some slightly 'Focus' sounding parts which combined with raw Thrash is pretty interesting.

Tankard - Chemical Invasion - 1987
Finally got something by this band and for some reason I was expecting something less thrashy and simpler so no complaints. Good production. Catchy stuff. Amusing lyrical themes. TANTRUM. WHO STOLE MY BEER? TANTRUM. YOU MUST DIE.

Defiance - Void Terra Firma - 1990
I like these guys. Not quite as good as their first album, but still solid. Plenty of interesting riffs and some really good solos. The vocals like it says on MA sound like a drunk Chuck Billy, and the guitars sound paper thin, but it doesn't detract too much from the album.

Tourniquet - Stop the Bleeding - 1990
Damn, this is some weird shit, but really good. Recently I've been checking out Christian Thrash bands and each one of them has far surpassed my expectations, this band in particular. Each Christian band I've listened to just sounds really unique, and for some reason seem to use their talent more than other Thrash bands.
The vocals in this album are all over the place. The first two songs are mostly melodically sung sounding very much like the Cyclone Temple vocalist in both their range and style. The second song could easily have been put on a late-80s Overkill album and probably go unnoticed, and also there's a part that sounds very Annihilator. The third song is much heavier than the first two with staccato vocals to match, but sounds like Control Denied in the chorus. Then there's a part that I'm sure I heard in a Papa Roach song, and then some interesting drumming including the use of a cowbell with some whispered vocals before one of the impressive melodic solos to be found on this album. I can't be bothered to write much more but basically the riffs are plentiful and in lots of different styles, sometimes incorpating slides and dives. The vocals really are all over the place. Loads of ideas, all the time!

This is a seriously underrated thrash classic, and the excellent music is only half the reason why. Puke and Tantrum have the greatest thrash lyrics ever, and of course, the song where he dumps his girlfriend because she says he drinks too much. I'm too lazy to look it up right now, but it's hilarious.
