Thumbs up Immortal Returning?

They posted this a couple of days ago on their website:

04.05.2005: In a recent interview with BW&BK (Brave Words & Bloody Knuckles) magazine, ex-IMMORTAL bassist Iscariah revealed that former Immortal frontman Abbath is currently hammering out new music: "I spoke to Abbath a few months ago and he's keeping himself busy doing a demo with the guitar player from ENSLAVED. It's taken quite some time because just before I moved the UK (over a year ago) he came to my house and played some of the music to me. It's got an "At The Heart Of Winter" kind of feel to it. It's really heavy, really stong material. You can definitely hear who wrote it, and that's a compliment. It's brilliant stuff. I can't wait for him to get back out there. Abbath is an amazing artist and an amazing stage presence. He needs to be out there."

I know there aren't many Immortal fans on here just thought it was worth pointing out. This is the best news I've heard in a while,"At the Heart of Winter" is my favorite album ever,so this sounds great.

Yes!! My only hope is that if they do, they come back as good as they were before. Maybe better.

I don't like black metal too well, but they are probably my favorite BM band I've heard. So it would be nice if new material came out. Didn't they quit just because they didn't feel like playing anymore? Personal problems between them or something like that (from the website, that's what it says anyway). It'd be great to have 'em back up and running again, though. I was thinking one of them went to prison for murder, but that must've been some other BM band.
Oh well. Let's hope for the best.

No,there was no personal problems they split on good terms. They never really said why they broke up(to my knowledge).Burzum(Varg Vikernes)was who was aressted for murder.Immortal distanced themselves from all the church burning/satanic/pagan/murder bullshit, one of they many reasons they are my favorite black metal band.

Yeah, doesn't all of Immortal's work take place in a fictional place? Pretty neat.

You forgot Faust went to jail too.

I'd like them to come back, if Demonaz could rejoin as well. New Immortal has nothing on old Immortal.

if I'm correct this is just Abbath's new "band", it's not music for immortal.

That could be the case, which is why I added the question mark on the title name.I wouldn't care either way,if it sounds like At the Heart of Winter it would be great even if it isn't Immortal.

Immortal was good because they had that thrash element in there. Them, Emperor, and Grand Belial's Key are the only blakc metal I can really listen to these days on a regular basis.

Because there are some metal fans who claim black metal is "faggoty" and "poserly" and "crap" and "consist of queers who run around wearing makeup", but I am not one of these people. Immortal's return is good news in my mind.

I don't mind the image of black metal but I have to admit that Immortal are the kings when it comes to cheese. They're videos are ridiculous and this is coming from an Immortal fan. I hate the way they look but I am a huge fan of the music. I hope they do come back.

It's dispicable, in pertainence to dissection that is. I cant believe my ears, half 80's pop/metal and half dissection. Jon should have changed the bands name.

It would have been like the hellhammer celtic frost thing.

And of course, hellhammer is way way heavier.

Im not a huge fan of Immortal, but i do like them. I own At the heart of winter, but i never really thought it sounded black metal. Other than the look, and perhaps the vocals. Being a part of the 5% who actually judge by the sound of the music, i say they arnt too black metal, and i like that.

thank you, my new signature is a little too unfortunately true.

I will accept whatever it is they would like to call themselves, and im glad to hear that they didnt call themselves "black", because i never saw it that way, and ive now heard that it wasnt called so. After all, the creators of the music can catagorize their music as they please. Just as any person can pronounce their names however they choose too. Call it a bad comparison if you will, but it makes sense to me.

The genre of black metal is so diverse that there is much need for further categorization in my humble opinion. How do you describe venom? Or Vlad Tepes? Or even a less know band like Dub Buk? Are they all black metal? In a sense, yes they are. Black metal is in a way, all about that very first song....Black Metal by Venom. And in another way, black metal is harsh soundindg and sounds like pure evil all the time. Vlad Tepes is an excellent black metal band, that uses awesome soloing techniques, as well as great guitar and song writing in general. No one can rip of Vlad Tepes, since the production is so poor it is hard to make out both guitars properly. Hence my lack of tab posting.

I don't even know if people checked out my Vlad Tepes tab. I forgot how to play one of those riffs anyways so I might as well check it out, see if there are mistakes etc.

Good to see another open minded individual around here who is interested in great music like Immortal. They truely were the kings of Norway, much more technical and musically superb than your average "black" metal band.

However, in black metal, technicality means nothing. It is all about feeling and hatred. At least that is how I view it, the more fucked up and detrimental a black metal album sounds, the better it is to me. Regardless of quality musicianship.

oh really. how about this phrase, which i believe ive stated before ... "who said black metal is supposed to be technical". there you go. and on top of that, you are wrong even for what you were getting at. go listen to mourn in silence. what do you know, ive said that here before too. well people call them black metal, and some people admit the guitars are technical as well. hmm, did they break the wall between the two lines drawn by narrow minded fucks? NO. its just simply their style.

Black metal inspired death metal. Without black metal, there would be no death metal as we know it today. What were death metal bands influenced by? Huh?

Venom started well before any "death" metal band did. And aside from that, you had Hellhammer and Bathory right afterwords, and Mayhem came to life in 1984. Black metal is older, and superb to death metal regardless of technical density.

Being technical means you can do something that is technical. Does it sound good? What matters more in the end, a satisfying song, or one that is "really technical?"

I prefer black metal because they cut the technical crap out, and get right to the point. Unlike Necrophagist, where the musicians just practice all day and play wank metal and call it melodic death metal. Or Opeth, give me a fucking break. That is not metal, Opeth is shit. I would take Deathcrush over morningrise anyday, and any REAL metalhead would do the same...because Opeth is not metal.

In the end, black metal is older than death metal and inspired it, so it is superb by default. Not to mention the fact that "real" black metal never sold out, and never will. Death metal on the other hand, haha, you can find this so called "death" metal in local stores. How deadly is that? Ever heard Belphegor? They are black/death, but try telling me they have no technical skills. Vlad Tepes has more technical skills and is pure black metal. However, you will never find their music because it is simply too metal for you.

Doubtful that it'll ever happen. But Immortal make dissection's booty go *smack*.

You know, I don't feel like coming back here, and this 2nd post doesn't mean anything either, but go listen to Dissection's first two albums, then tell me that "technical" and "black metal" don't make sense together.

And Immortal isn't your run-of-the-mill 3 chord progression black metal band. Jesus tapdancing christ.

Death Metal influcenced Grindcore.

And Venom is not Black Metal. They just called themselves that until some faggot in corpse paint, tight leather pants holding a sword basterdized the term. Now almost everyone who looks like an elf in clown makeup calls themselves it.

It is my oppinion that Glam Metal influenced Black Metal and Thrash Metal influenced Death Metal. Glam Metal and Thrash Metal hated each other. Thrash Metal would call Glam faggots and Glam would accuse Thrash of being noise. So history repeats itself.

Glam Metal influenced Black and Thrash? *BUZZ* Wrong.

Metal was influenced by alot of old 70's punk, as well as bands that started popping up in the vein of Black Sabbath. Thrash and Speed Metal started as a want to be harder and faster than any other music. Venom, a thrash band, coined the term "Black Metal" because of the satanic themes in their music.

Sabbath and punk begat thrash/speed begat death metal/black metal begat grindcore, etc. etc.

Today's history lesson is over. Go listen to Sodom and please, do not open your mouth lest you be informed.

I said Glam Metal influenced Black Metal!!!!! Or at least Black is a spawn off of Glam Metal. I never said anything about Glam influenced Thrash.

And why has black metal been called the retarded little brother of death metal, from it's earliest days?

Why don't you grow up before you come here. This^ is the dumbest thing I have ever read. Fuck off! Have a great BM life

Immortal are one of my favorite bands, and I don't even like black metal way too much. I'm a huge fan, but unfortunately I got into them after they split up. These news made me very happy, I'll be hearing more of Abbath's awesomeness.

Death metal influenced grindcore? Wtf... Real grindcore is extremely fast jambled up punk with blastbeats, growling/screeching vocals, and politically aware lyrics. The use of blastbeats in grindcore(Napalm Death coined the term "blastbeat") let to the use of blastbeats in death metal, so: grindcore influenced modern death metal, while oldschool death metal(no blastbeats) was a more extreme version of thrash. Just listen to some early Death, Sepultura, Unleashed... it simply feels like thrash.

Black metal and death metal are two different forms of music, unless you're talking about bands that take influences from both sides. Black metal = cutting down on musicmanship skills, but creating very emotional music. I don't even like black metal too much but I get this intense feeling when I listen to Mayhem, a band that could barely handle their instruments. It's a very passionate feeling of hate that real black metal bands try to get through their music.

This doesn't mean that death metal is all about technicality, some bands simply like to wank on their instruments because they can. Early Morbid Angel kicks fucking ass, it wasn't the best musicmanship in the world, but it was extreme like thrash and -like black metal- it also gave you this intense feeling when you listen to it.

I can enjoy simple music if all you want to do is get a message across, but being good at your instruments/songwriting means being able to make heavier music, that's what heavy metal is all about. Making the most extreme stuff possible, it's just that some people decide to take different directions. I can't name one black metal band that feels as brutal as Decapitated or Suffocation, though.

Don't get me wrong, I still love some black metal, but I care more for the feeling and message in death/thrash metal.

Please explain to me WHY Opeth isn't metal. Don't leave out any details, you must have had a good reason for saying it. Inform me since I must retarded in the ways of music and I need your "superb" guidance.

So just because black metal came first it makes it better? Listen, things get improved. That's why things are the way they are today. Long ago someone had an idea of something that would help make this world a better place then someone else came along and found way to make that thing better. You see how the world works? Things change with time and it gets better as it keeps reinventing itself. As goes for the metal world, just like fine wine.

The first 'black' metal was closer to thrash anyway.

Venom's first two albums were labeled as "Speed metal"... early black metal was basically Mötorhead-oriented music with evil lyrics, that's all. Bathory sped things up, then came the 2nd wave of BM like Emperor, Mayhem, Darkthrone, etc. ... which is what most people associate with BM nowadays.

Well, anyway, Immortal fucking rules - be it black or death metal. So quit bitching, people.

Black Metal is better because it is true. The real black metallers kill, and burn down churches.

Opeth is not metal because they use acoustic guitars way too much, and they don't sound like Metal half the time. Sure, Morningrise has a few metal moments, but Opeth is not Metal. Opeth ruins metal if anything. Fuck Opeth, they suck dick, and they sound like pussy's. Metal is supposed to be threatening, not soothing. My faggot roomates like Opeth, that makes me think Opeth is not metal. Need more explanations?

If we are on a band bashing mood like jittery sniper I would have to say Burzum is "not metal." Why? because to me its just ambient noise filled with screams and something I cant stand to listen to for more than 15.65 seconds. Sure Opeth uses acoustics, but does that mean they suck or are "not metal?" No. Granted they arent the heaviest most br00tl band out there. There is more than one side to metal. And Ive heard bands use more acoustics than BWP and Morningrise combined. Thats my opinion and I dont know why you walk around like your shit dont stink.

Oh, that explains it all now doesn't it. I forgot that BM is all trOO My bad.

BTW, who wrote the rules that say in order to be TROO BM you must kill something and burn a church? WTF does chruch have to do with anything if you don't even believe in GOD? I think that if one notices churches that much then one does believe in GOD and are scared of what that may mean.

WTF does any of that have to do with music?

Yes Immortal rule, but my mind keeps coming back to that cheesy video of them running around with guitars in the wilderness with fake lightnings all over the place. Fucking badgers haha.

As for the death vs. black argument, so much more talent is in the death metal scene than in the black metal scene, and thinking about it, black metal really isn't that brutal, vs death metal which is. Then again, you can't argue about personal preferences.

i gave "at the heart of winter" a closer listen recently. i like it more than before. even the simplest of riffs throughout the songs soung good just because their accompanied with some pretty fast drums. i kind of wish there were keybaords throughout these nice parts, but i bet people actually like them better because they dont have hardly any keyboards.

Possibly. Thats one reason why I dont consider Immortal black metal in a "true" sense. Granted their lyrics are black, Id still be interested in how they turn out.

06.06.2005: Ex-Immortal bass player Iscariah has started a new project called Dead To This World. Formed in Bergen, Norway, in 2002 & is set out to be Iscariah's (Necrophagia, Immortal RIP) solo project which sees the return to the ancient speed/thrash/black metal underground. The first demo was recorded on the 23rd of April 2005 in Voltage Studios Bradford, UK. A limited edition hand numbered promo package of 150 copies will be sent out to relevant & potential sources in the scene, but will not be available for sale to the public. However, the demo in its entirety is available for free download here for a limited period only! The debut album will be recorded this summer & a lineup for liveshows will be announced shortly. Heavy collaboration with French cult artist Chris Moyen (Blasphemy, Beherit, Black Witchery etc.) is in the works & will be revealed shortly also for merchandise, upcoming releases & possibly a strictly limited vinyl release as well. The tracklist of the Demo 2005 is:

Goatpower
Dead To This World
Pacifist Terrorist
Official homepage: www.myspace.com/deadtothisworld/

Thought this is somewhat related,I have'nt got a chance to here any of these songs yet,but will when I get the time.
