i wanna record some of my shit by using a mic before my amp

now where do i put my mic, rilli close to the cab of with soms distance??

and where do i plug the mic in?? the same red slot in the back of ur pc where u normaly would put the line out from ur amp in??

It depends on a LOT of factors and cannot be really be calculated or assumed for a given space with given equipment.. People mic close to the cabinet for isolation when there are multiple instruments and they are feeding it to a PA. Most people assume this is the "correct" way because they see it being done a lot, but that is really one of the worst ways to mic a cabinet.

A microphone is the same as your ear. Just move around the room until it sounds the best to your ear and then place the mic there.

I'm not sure which thread smartass up there is referring to, but I'm pretty sure it was most likely worthless.

i shudder everytime i see a sound guy pointing a mic at a speaker like it's a fucking bullseye. then people blame other things fro why the guitars sound so harsh and shrill.

it depends on the mic, the cab, the speakers, the room, the head, ect... trial and error my friend.

I can barley hear my recordings even when i mic it straight up to the cab, much less anywhere in the room, and SM57's are directional mics.
