Oh my God! Metal from Montreal? Incredible!
Wait, hold on, I just found another one: anybody hear of this band Cryptopsy? I just found 'em the other day. Pretty good. Apparently they've been around for the years and are often discussed on this site, but I figured I'd let you guys in on the secret.

I heard there's a Deathmetal band called... you'll love this... DEATH!
They have some nice songs, but their nothing new, other bands already did 3 years ago what they do now, and they have such a corny name, like calling a powermetal band POWER! or a doom metal band DOOM!
I would like to see them live once tough...

Am I the only one that really enjoys the vocals? No generic growling... no ear shattering black metal screetch... just some good old screaming, with audible vocals..
ITS FUN HEARING WHAT THEIR SINGING!

Martyr wouldn't be Martyr without those vocals - they simply wouldn't suit a gutteral death style.

I'm with BLS. Guttural growling makes so many bands sound generic and mundane.

Yes, the vocals rule. At first I was iffy about them but, they just fit. Same as how Slayer wouldnt be Slayer without Tom's vocals, it is the only thing that would work.

i really dont like those vocals. they are too strained and weak... but gutteral vocals woudlnt fit either. its about the best compromise i guess

Whenever I listen to Warp Zone I am always reminded of Rust In Peace. I think I actually prefer Daniel's playing to Marty's though and I reckon Martyr's riffs a slightly better - they're just that bit more complex.

i like the vocals. The screaming is awesome.. it almost sounds like a more up beat cryptopsy vocal. Its a hearty a cajun bellow almost.

Mongrain's lead playing rips Friedman's leads' eyes out and skull-fucks them until they stop screaming for mercy in Japanese and hit the last resort of admitting to actually knowing English in an attempt to stop the ruthless eye socket fuckery. Unfortunately Friedman doesn't know French to my knowledge. But I don't think I'd say the riffs are qualitatively better than Mustaine's on RIP. Megadeth's more of a riff-based band than Martyr ever wanted to be, though. The approaches to songwriting are pretty different; Martyr's time studying music shows, as does Mustaine's position in the thrash movement.
What's the problem with the vocals? I always see people complain about the vocals, but it's always just 'The vocals are bad,' never 'Such-and-such would be better,' more or less leaving it to the people defending the band to put suggestions in the mouths of the complainers. I can't think of anything that would be better myself, but I also don't have even a slight problem with Mongrain's vocals. I don't have any complaints about the band's sound.

Better than Megadeth? I don't think that; why would I say it? I was just saying that I don't think they can be compared like John was comparing them, and that Friedman's a pimp who never could've outfought Santino.

Or... your opinion turns a complete 180 based upon what established forum members say?!? Yes, i think thats accurate.
My opinion? Martyr kill Megadeth. I've never really been a big Deth fan.
You all talk about the awesomeness of Crytopsy, and the dominance of Martyr... Well, imagine my glee when i saw Daniel play with Cryptopsy..... Aww, asexual orgasm...

I have "Warp Zone" by Martyr laying around here on my computer. But reguardless of anyone else's opinion, Megadeth slay Martyr anyday.
I mean, "Hangar 18." Thats all anyone has to say.

They don't actually play 'so many styles' unless you're a metalhead and don't realize there are other styles out there.
Anyway, this thread took the dumbest turn ever.

No, because it became focused solely on Megadeth vs Martyr, therefore becoming a vs thread in disguise, therefore being dumb as shit. Your opinions I could care less about, especially as I haven't even bothered to state mine.

It's not "Funkiness", it's Jazz, pure and simple. Both Dan and his brother, Francois (bassist) were put through Jazz guitar and bass lessons respectively for many many years as kids. It was years later, when they discovered the world of metal, they realized that if they combined their in-depth knowledge of jazz music with their love of metal, they could come up with some incredibly complex music, and that's exactly what they've done.
I've had the pleasure of playing a show with Martyr for their "Warp Zone" tour, and it was a music lesson without comparison. We are looking forward to playing with them again on August 26th, in Toronto, as well.
(P.S. Looks like Dan has left Cryptopsy to devote himself full-time to Martyr once again....oh, and Quo Vadis...uh...and about 5 other bands...lol)
Cheers.

WHat makes Martyr so good is that they are just flat our amazing song writers who have such a vast knowledge of music and great technical skill that it is naturally technical music. Daniel has already stated he hates teh word "technical". You can tell just by listening to them that they never sit down and say "We need a super technical riff here." they just own everyone.
The leads, songwriting, technicality, vocals, and originality all blow Megadeth away.

The Martyr site implies that he was 'in' Cryptopsy, so if you follow Martyr more closely it might seem that way.
Yeah, Martyr really did something more original than blazing the thrash trail and starting the tech trend in metal. Let's all shut up now, especially you.

I was unaware of this, as i dont follow Martyr at all. I just know that when i saw them live, Lord Worm's said "We'd like to thank our good friend Daniel from Martyr for filling in on this tour," which led me to believe that he was never anything more than a temp. I dont know though, you could very possibly be right. It really doesn't matter though, so theres no reason to debate it.

What debate? I was just explaining why a Martyr fan might be confused about Mongrain's status in Cryptopsy. You're still right that he was never doing more than filling in.
Just wait until I'm back in Chi-town, BLS.

I spoke to Dan last year when Cryptopsy played in Oshawa. At the time, he said he was considering joining them on a full-time basis, but didn't want to give up Martyr. So I suppose both stances are correct...he wasn't 100% IN the band, but the invite was there for his acceptance. I'm just glad the new Martyr is coming out...no matter who else he's playing with!
Cheers

Look at the chords, progressions, and just the riffs that Martyr play. Everything they do is different, each song stands out on its own. Now how many Megadeth songs do the same basic thing. For example on the Rust in the Peace album |-0-2-3-|. That progression is used in almost every song. And what about Dave's love of "Symphony of Destruction"-esque *da da da* [talk] *da da da*.
Yes, Megadeth was original from other bands, but almost every great band is. My point is that Megadeth seem to enjoy the idea of recycling. There is nothing wrong with it, fuck Slayer does it all the time, Jeff Hannamen inparticular. But Martyr never does it, granted they olny have 2 albums out so far but everything is so unique.

Strats are great guitars... just not typically used for metal. Did his sound suffer? I think not!

Not quite.. from what I can tell it just seems like he threw an EMG humbucker in the bridge and an EMG single coil in the neck

your thinking i ment styles as in genres... thats not what i was saying...
what i ment was that they take a bit of Steve Vai, a bit of Deth, a bit of Van Halen etc, give it a jazzy feel, and get this great sound...

I heard he did something to the bridge as well... could be wrong though. I haven't seen pictures of his guitar too many times either.

back to the topic at hand. ive been learning "warp zone" by them and its VERY difficult. honestly i didnt believe all the techinical hype, or even more accruately understand, untill i tried to play it. i cant get some of the time parts down, the riffs have weird fingering...all sorts of strings used.... its really hard. not ot mention the solos, which all have huge string skipping segments!

BUMP!
Just to say that I saw them Saturday night in Quebec City and they played three new songs (not Perpetual.. and Wreck) and it simply fuckin shreds. Period. They also said they're getting back full time on the new album so they hope it's gonna be out pretty soon.

when i saw them in Hull (in a church basement) a drumstick broke off in the drummers eye...he was down for a bit, then they finished the song and played another 30 minutes...with a 2 song encore off the early album!
