Minor difficulty in the studio
We just recently got an acoustic kit to replace the roland electronic drum kit we were using. I don't know exactly what is needed to records drums properly. We have two pencil mics for cymbals, however I don't know if that will pick all of them up. We are known for having a a somewhat clear sound, where all the notes are heard. However there is a flip side, we can't get all the levels working properly. I might be making this thread in jest too so bear with me, as I am new to using this digital recording shit.
What mics do I need to records drums? We have 4 cymbals not including the high hats. I need to know where to place the mics. I can record guitar fine, and since we used to use a roland kit we could just plug the bastard right in and record the cymbals with the pencil mics.
All of my old recordings were done on a four track, I would then go to my friend Bob at work and he would then make me a cd from my tape. I have one of the originals to this day, and the quality is terrible. Now that I have formed this new band I have access to their studio setup, which isn't "really" a studio but it's everything we need aside from a mic or two.
Wish me luck cause I need it, we have shitloads of demos and if anyone wants a demo, I will personally make one, hand sign it, ship it and everything for free. However supplies are somewhat limited at the time.
Right now our demo selection resembles this
1. Arctic wolves - Demo, 6/12/03, all instruments done by Jeremy Celtic Warlord Leishman
In brief, this is my first recording ever. I was out of my mind at the time, losing sleep and smoking way too much sweet leaf just to make this one recording. This kinda sucks, but it does have some outstanding lead work considering the goal here is black fvkking metal. For kvlt fans only, this is raw shit. Live from my bedroom.
2. Northwest Moon Frost - Demo ?/?/05
this is a full length Demo that is promotional and limited to 100 or so copies, we will be releasing it around 6/12/05.
Lineup
Celtic Warlord Leishman - Solo/Lead guitar and Vocals
Josh Monks - Rythm/Lead Guitar
Aaron Newberry - Drums
Allen Riley - Bass
tracks:
1. Funeral Moon In The Valley
2. Sons Of Northwest Moon Frost
3. Arctic Wolves of Icy Death
4. Cryptic Skies and Burning minds
5. Funeral Hammer
bonus/re-release material
6. Black Hearts and Bloody Teeth(reform marijuana laws) ~Acoustic
7. Draconian Blood
8. Kvlt days and Kvlter nights
9. Rattlehead (megadeth cover)
This is our first full album, this is the band Midnight Empire performing. This album pretty much sums up what is going on right now with the one and only kvlt metal band in Oregon as far as we know. I think it has some killer stuff, none of these tracks are filler.
So if anyone wants some free metal, talk to me and I'll get some wheels turning.

Just a little diagram of something I learnt in music school
Also, unless you've got about $5000, I wouldn't buy a pair of Neumann U87s for overheads, like that website said. AKG C1000s will do you proud. SM57 on the snare, D112 on the kick and a half-decent set of tom mics on the toms will get you a nice sound providing you mix it all right. You'll need compression on the kick drum too, otherwise it's likely to sound like a mess
Also, never mix the snare or kick drum anywhere other than central in the stereo field, and pan the toms so any tom rolls/fills sound sexy. Boost around 4.5KHz on the kick drum for a nice clicky slap, and sweep out the frequencies between 80Hz and 300/400Hz so that the bass guitar has somewhere to sit cleanly in the mix
Man, I could go on forever about this... but I'll leave it at that and let you learn some stuff on your own

Wow, thanks alot man. I am going to print this out later, or write it down and give it to my drummer tommarow. We are always open to suggestions, that is why I want to give some demos out before I try to go out and play the bar scene with this band. Thanks again.
