Speaker advice.....

I have a Fender UltraChorus (2-12" speakers, solid-state, 65W RMS per channel stereo amps, built-in chorus, multiple effects loops, dual footswitch, reverb and overdrive channel), which I bought used for $300. It had had the original Fender speakers replaced with Peaveys, which look used. When I get the amp up to just 1.5 with the gain all the way up I get this sort of clicking/popping sound. I checked the speakers and they aren't busted, though they do look like shit.... I don't know anything about all this so I guess I should blame it on the speakers. If it is the speakers, what kind should I get? I don't know what all the technical stuff means, but I am poor, so I was concidering the celestion rocket 50's. What do yall think?
