Yes that's true its tricky at first but if you practice it you will get it just fool around with it until you think is a harmonic then practice it

depends on how you want it to sound, and you can use any note you want it doesnt matter you just have to find the right "sweet spot" for it

where to hit the string, when you do a pinch harmonic. depending on where you hit the string the 'squel' will sound differnt when its really high and nice is the sweet spot

I think that there is more than one spot on a fret where you can hit a good sounding pinched harmonic. Also, it depends on your guitar as to where your harmonics sound the best.

And you MUST have a $1500+ guitar to do anything cool on it, like Squeals.

They can be very frustrating to a new player, but practice them enough and you will be able to hit them at will, with ease.
Oh, and andrewc is telling the truth, mad gain is your best friend when trying to pull off harmonics.

are you using your bridge hum? that will make the pinch harmonic come through more
theres no real way to hold your pick, theres so many different ways to hold a pick and for each of those theres a way to pinch

do you know what the bridge is on your guitar? the humbucker thats closest to that is called the bridge humbucker likewise the one thats closest to the neck (if you have one that is) is called the neck humbucker

the easiest way I've found to hit a harmonic(squeal) is to hold your pick close to the tip, angled slightly so that just a little of your thumb and the pick hit at the same time. If you do this correctly you will be able to hit one anywhere on the guitar with or without distortion.

Everybody always says try it on the 12th fret of the G string. Easiest place to start.

practice pantera- cemetary gates, thats how I learnt them. Its one of those things that takes a while to get, but once you get it, its easy. I often throw in pinched harmonics when I practice songs anyway. playing seek and destroy with pinched harmonics is quite funny.

Hope this helps this is the easiest way I can possibly describe it. I know it's a bit wordy, but never mind.
First off play some easy natural harmonics. If you aren't familiar with natural harmonics then read on. If you are familiar then skip to the next part. Natural harmonics occur when you place a finger gently on the string (not fretting the note) and the string is plucked. This creates a light sound, not the squeal you are after, but I'm getting to that bit. The easiest places for natural harmonics are fret numbers 5, 7, 12, 15, 17, and 24. Lightly place your finger directly over the metal strip of the fret and play the note. Practice the natural harmonics until you are familiar with the sound it creates.
Now play natural harmonics, but instead of using your fretting hand to touch the string, use your thumb of your picking hand WHILST SIMULTANEOUSLY PICKING THE STRING. Try this at the 24th fret of the G string. Once you get the same sound as you do when you use both hands, you've got the technique down.
Now all you have to do is think logically. If the 24th fret is the best place to get the harmonic for the G note, then if you fretted the first fret on the G string (Gsharp/Aflat) then the best place to get the pinched harmonic would be just above the 24th fret.If you played the next note up (the A) then your pinched harmonic should come about a centimetre closer to the bridge than the previous harmonic. Practice playing the chromatic scale (all semitones) on the G string, each time remembering to move your picking hand up a "fret" at a time aswell. That is pinched harmonics.
In order to get the squeal, you must use a fast vibrato technique in conjunction with the pinched harmonic to get that distinctive "weeeew" sound, but that comes with practice.
If you want my opinion, pinched harmonics are overdone in metal anyway.

herswhathagottado. instead of picking it like you normally would. just kinda rub the tip of you're pic on the string and in the same motion mute the string with the edge of you're thumb and take it off REALLY fast. give the pinch a little vibrato and...**ooweeeooweee**!!!
also. its better to learn them WITHOUT distortion. if you learn to do it this way. then with distortion the pinch will be extra loud and you can sustain for daaaaaaaaaazzzzeeeee.

dude the best place to pratice or to learn it is on the 3rd fret of the Low E and A strings...you need a whammy bar but...what you do is you pick the string you want...either A or E and then with your index finger natural harmonic the string (like touch the string so it sounds awkward and not distorted) then pull back on the whammy bar and vibrato it...3rd fret on Low E and A strings has some of the best sound...make sure you mute all the other strings for maximum squealing...
