Alot of metal bands are technically technical, it's just the nature of the genre. But not all the bands that play complex music actually end up sounding like they are technical. A good example of a band that is and sounds technical is necrophagist. When you here it you just admire how complex it sounds even to someone who doesn't know anything about making music, or music theory.
To the point, which band do you think sounds the most complex, because I'm getting into this whole technical death thing now.
Sinners Bleed
Psycroptic
Malignancy
Domination Through Impurity
Odious Mortem
Godless Truth
Gorguts
Neuraxis
Symbiontic
Torn Within
Vomit Remnants
Corpus Mortale
Wormed
Coprofago
etc.

Haha, what the hell. Im talking to you in 3 threads now. Yeah meshuggahs guitars are really simple but the drums make it good. I never really have a good idea of whats going on in some of their songs becuase im trying to figure out what the drums are doing.
Cryptopsy didn't sound that technical a lot of the time on their first 2 albums. But after that......
Almost everything on Unique Leader.
Also, just thought I'd add, I love it when you hear a band that doesn't seem that technical at first, and then upon further listening to it you realise how fucked it is..... Immolation for example.

haha so true, they play the simplest guitar riffs yet they feel the need to have an 8 string custom built...
i think thats the guitar

my current favorites are Neglected Fields and Augury.
Augury is like Cryptopsy with female vocals.

how come no one's said Dying Fetus?
also NILE, Fantomas, Dillinger Escape Plan, Strapping Young Lad, Bad Acid Trip
What the fuck?
Strapping Young Lad play with OPEN C, not just Drop C. It's totally finger chords. How the fuck is that technical?
I enjoy Meshuggah but I wouldn't say they are really technical. The solos may be fast but they sound like a brain-damaged R2D2. Everyone who says that the drumming makes the band is wrong. The drummer, more often than not, plays 4:4 whilst the guitarist play shit like 23:16. The riffs are tricky to learn but not fucking hard like Necrophagist solos or Psycroptic riffs. If you played a Meshuggah riff (the opening to New Millenium Cyanide Christ for example) without drums backing, it would sound like a piece of shit, like just randomly playing on the first two frets and wouldn't sound technical at all.

Cephalic Carnage is one of the most technical bands I have ever heard.
Nile
Cryptopsy
Suffocation
Cannibal Corpse
Gordian Knot are not technical for the second time.

Sure they are, though they're less focused on it than most of the bands mentioned. I'm not sure it would be possible to reunite Cynic and not end up with something at least somewhat technical. Not one of my favorites, but they obviously know their way around their instruments. They're also content to have simple parts when they're called for, which is not a mark against them.
Haake's upper body usually plays in 4:4, while his lower body plays in the same time signature as the rest of the band, which usually eventually fits into 4:4 anyway, if you let it go on long enough.
Great topic, by the way. You people aren't focused enough on technicality as it is.
Also, the topic's on whether or not the band sounds technical. All your bickering about whether are not they're legitimately difficult or whatever seems irrelevant. But carry on.

Sleep Terror! Goddamn Luke is amazing, more tech than Necrophagist.
yep sleep terror is amazing, it just seems to me that the songs get rather boring after a few times of listening it, while necrophagist doesnt have that...

The only fantomas iv heard was some svrgical sovnds shit lol, it was fucked up, i cant remember there being any instruments, just a bunch of fucked noises
yeah, those jazz parts in sleep terror could do without, it fragments a song, its like as if something random was spliced in that doesnt mesh, then again i only listened to the myspace songs, beyond that its good shit
Hey don't talk back buddy. Give your dick size or don't post.

Now Now, lets not go crazy here.
Sleep Terror are amazing yes, and are more experimental in thier music, adding breakdowns and Jazz parts.. but Necrophagist have a more consistent technicality. Better bass solos too.. in fact.. Sleep Terror dont have a bassist atm.. downside for me... Necrophagist's solos are so good, almost unbeatable. Hard Rock solos just dont do it for me. Necrophagist are backed by technicality and IMO have emotion .. Advanced Corpse Tumour is a great example.
And then Their vocals contrast their beautiful music, another great bonus.
My goal is to one day play Advanced Corpse Tumour
Dying Fetus are quite technical but also simplistic at times
(see Kill you mother / Rape your Dog) - that song is almost rapped, i hate, but also respect that.
I also think Dillinger Escape Plan are quite technical, but not D.M... and Disgorge have the Pinch Harmonics coming out of nowhere - love that..
just recapping Suffocation .. some retard spelt it incorrectly before..
and finally ill contribute Agoraphobic Nosebleed.. They are pretty technical.. but more on the Noisecore side...
P.S. whoever said Cynic..
They are awesome and Technical, but i dunno about Death Metal
One more thing.. Decapitated? Technical? One of my favourite bands but not technical... they dont have any decent solos and their music is rather simplistic and on-going. IMO they are just labelled "Technical"
I could say more but probably no-one bothered to read this . so yeah...

Burzum is pretty technical.
hehe, not really. I agree with everyone who said Necrophagist. Necrophagist is currently one of my favorites. I do enjoy Burzum though, probably more than Necrophagist regardless of technicality.
as far as I've encountered, I'd say Necrophagist, Nile, and now that I've finally got hear some Cryptopsy, them as well. Their singer sounds pretty wicked too. I'm also gonna note even though the topic is most likely referring to tech DM bands, COB, to me, has alot of technical shit in it.

- They're hard as hell to play, I mean really hard. String skipping to the max.
- They seamlessly pop weird-arse chords into their faster riffs. See the end of "Liqufying Cerebral Hemispheres" if you want an example
- They've never heard of a 4/4 time signature.
