The only reason King has that boost is because he needs it to get the extra overdrive out of his Marshall amps, which are not very high gain. If you use a high gain amp then boost control is kinda silly and might just over distort the amp. EMG 85/81 work just fine for me. they have a high enough output without having a boost control.

I figured he used that boost for leads, but in the wrong hands that boost could be a pain in the ass.

Some few guitarist I have played with in my years seem to always to want there shit louder then everyone else, including the drummer, and I mean much louder. As if we were just back ground music for him to practice to. It just fucks the whole sound up imo. I know that leads need a little boost, but I can imagen a situation where everyones shit is leveled correctly but then Mr. Ego guitarist just kills the mix by using his secret boost knob EMG needs to make sure they know who they are selling those thing to. It could ruin bands around the globe.

True, but once a volume hog always a volume hog. They might work for awhile with the band but you just know deep down inside they want to be X5 louder then everyone else. That boost knob might be just a little to tempting and next thing you know the Volume Hog is back

I read that Kerry uses that boost knob on nights where his sound isn't all that great ( ).....and if you ever listen to some live slayer...when kerry breaks off to do his solos....or whatever you call it....you can barely hear jeff playing rhythm!! Once kerry comes back its like the music starts over....

Also, I could see buying the EMG ZW set, because it comes with the pots you need for Gibs and Epi's.....but whats the fucking point of a KFK set??? You could just buy that shit like xdisx said...cheap as could be.

I noticed that live slayer thing. That you can't hear jeff anymore, but I always thought it was because of the quality of the video or something. I have a live video and they play south of heaven. when kerry starts his solo it looks like jeff is playing air guitar

Jeff is just as good as Kerry and he just doesn't seem to want to make crazy deals like this. It does kinda cheapen the artist when you see stuff like this. Some of this I understand. Slayer uses EMG, try them out: now that is fine with me, but when KFK condoms start coming out then you know that indorsing shit has went to far.

Question. Jeff use a EMG SPC control. I have never tried one. Has anyone else ever tried one?

Personally I think Jeff is way better than Kerry. Kerry's got stage appeal, but big fucking deal...that doesn't make you play guitar any better. Besides....jeff writes pretty much everything anyway. I think Kerry's biggest contribution was writing Hell Awaits by himself...which is cool an all....

As far as the SPC controller...it is odd Jeff uses that.

EMG says it is pretty much called the "strat presence control"....suppost to boost a single coil to make it sounds fatter....or used for a humbucker to give you a fatter tone thats great for slide guitar....I haven't heard slayer use slides yet....lol

Has anyone seen Slayer live recently?? I have, and I can say that Jeff misses at LEAST 20% of his notes while shredding, and Kerry, only a few the entire show. Plus Hanneman is so dumb he forgets solos to the songs, and sticks a crappy, sloppy, generic one where the REAL solo should be. So cut it out about Kerry King, he has more style in his (generally older) guitar playing, and especially shredding, than Jeff Hanneman ever will. >: (

I'm going to see Slayer this summer so I'll tell you if Jeff is as sloppy as he seems to be. The thing I get from watching the videos is that he always plays the "classic" solos correctly and awesome and a little sloppier on the DIM and GHUA stuff.

I saw slayer last november. When Kerry soloed, he just started trem picking and using the whammy bar randomly, and making weird noises. Jeff seemed to actually do stuff.
Since apparently Kerry wrote the entire Hell Awaits album, I give him LOTS of props for that. Thats my favorite slayer album easily.

Jeff wrote all of At Dawn They Sleep, Necrophiliac, and Hardening Of The Arteries(including lyrics) also the great Angel of Death(music & lyrics), Altar Of Sacrifice, Reborn, Postmortem(music & lyrics), and Raining Blood. So thats 60% of Reign in Blood... all Hanneman.

I liked (and can play) everything up to and including "South of Heaven" but everything after that is complete shit to me.

slayer solos are lame IMO. don't get me wrong, I love some slayer songs and they've been of great influence but I really can't get into any of their solos.

anyways, I'm cracking on some recordings now, I'm busy with fruity loops and trying some '80's style metal solo, I'm recording with my crappy combo though so don't expect killer tone.

I'm done recording, it's mostly improvised and some ripped from 80's metal solos from guitar books, so it's not super-tight.

the tapping (just after 33 secs) is a bit off unfortunalty and it's not all 'glued' together as in riffs.

who cares, slayer easily have the worst sounding guitars out of any big band ive ever heard. And whoever said theyre rad because they use chromatics, they didnt even intend to do that, its what comes out when you hit completely random notes. I do however like some of their songs.

they're commonly given credit for having the standard in thrash sound.

nothing sounds shitty to me. cranked jcm 800's with emg loaded guitars sound awesome.

as for chromatics... they did intend to do that. playing chromatic means you can play everynote that is available. so yes hitting random notes is "chromatic" but it doesnt have to sound like shit. they use them really well imo. so many metal and thrash bands over-use the minor scale sweeps. but to make use of all 12 notes in an "organized" and pleasant(for what that's worth) way, takes major skill.

i'm no slayer worshipper.. but i have ears and a brain. and anyone who says those bros don't have a lot of talent, is an ignorant asshat.

Kahler is even making a Slayer bridge now It's not just EMG that are cashing in on Slayers reputation.

The Kahler 2315 is made with a brass cam but steel roll saddles. Just like the ones slayer have one their guitars. I have a brass cam and roll saddles on mine. I always thought about mixing the cam and rollers to see what happens, but I guess slayer has been doing it for years now.
