I've played the combo version and judging by that, I wouldn't even consider it. Maybe not too terrible for a solid-state, but at the price they're asking it's just ridiculous.
The acoustic sim is just a lower gain version of the clean channel, sounds nothing like an actual acoustic guitar.

it's basically a piece of shit. if you want an ss marshall you're better off with the old ones, like the 8080 etc. or some ampeg ss amp.

I think the mode four is one of the few marshalls I actually like. It has a good gain imo. And nice/decent cleans. But over here it is hella expensive.

The Marshall Mode Four was a cool conept that Marshall swung at. Too bad they completely missed the ball.
Youre better off saving the money you waste on a Mode 4, and getting a nice all-tube amp, not that overpriced Marshall Hybrid BS!

Yes, Dying Fetus and Misery Index use the VH-140c, so did Suffocation pre-reunion. The SS series is almost identical to the VH series, just that the VH (Variable Harmonics) is the later model, and they modified the preamp a bit to be more tube-like. Both have the same power amp. They are all two channel amps, C after the model number means it has chorus. Assuck uses the SS-150. Both have insane amounts of gain. I just bought a nice SS-140c off ebay for $250.00..with original box and footswitch.... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...7314843120&rd=1 the link gives a good description of what the amp is equipped with...I opted for the SS because I needed an amp soon, and didn't feel like paying a few hundred more just to have a VH. Basically any VH-140c, SS-140c, VH-150, or SS-150 is a good bet.

i admit to liking the mode four... but only to a certain degree... definately better than the mg's and avt's, but compared to the jcm's, jtm,jmp,jmp-1,jubilee,super leads,ect.... it's nothing.
it is loud, but not really much louder than your average 100w tube top.
cleans are alright, decent sterile s.s. cleans with plenty of headroom.
crunch tones are lacking big time... but that's because imo what makes up good crunch tone is a set of powertubes cooking.
high gain is nice, it's tight, ballsy, and compressed. does the typical (nu)metal amp sound it was designed for.
jack of all trades, master of non.
for how much it costs, a dsl100 is a good alternative, equal in volume, and much more in versitility and sound quality.
not to mention the reliability problems they have... my friend had one, it broke, he got it fixed, they gave him a new one, it broke, he got a new one and sold it before it could break again.
the assistant manager at the local guitar center says those things have been brought back more than any other amps.

Almost all Ampeg guitar amps were discontinued.....you'll have to search around for them...

I have a marshall question:
If I were to buy a Marshall AVT or MG and put a tube preamp (JMP-1) in front of the AVT/MG preamp, would I get a tone with similar quality compared to a 2000 or a 900 or something similar?

No, you'd get an ultra shitty muddy sound.

I thought so. 'cause when you hear them live they have two completely different distortions. Sounds real weird.

duh man, for the price of an avt or an mg, you could just buy a poweramp and run it into a cab.
