Roadrunner is responsible for a shitload of great albums. Just because they make money off of shitty bands as well is plain simple economics of keeping a studio going in a world filled with shitty bands. If Opeth willingly signs the deal, then I can assume it is a good thing.

D'oh. I don't like where this is going. Although while they have been known to destroy bands like Fear Factory, Sepultura and to a lesser extent Brujeria, as well as having some terrible nu-metal acts on their list, they also have had some great ones.
This will be interesting. Can Opeth stand the test of Roadrunner? Only time will tell.

Yeah, I screwed it up somehow, sorry. I was giving him lip about TON.
Opeth signing on to Roadrunner scared me at first, but then I realized there's no possible way they can release a shitty album even if they tried. Plus maybe Roadrunner may give them a little attention they deserve but hopefully not too much. I don't want another Lacuna Coil situation to happen.

Mikael knows enough about music to know what he's getting himself into. Opeth don't look like it's possible for them to make a bad album just yet - I'm pretty sure they'll withstand the RR curse. What I'm worrying about is the commercialisation and possible tours (Devil Driver... oh dear)

I don't think Opeth can go mainstream, their music won't allow it. How many good Death Metal bands do you know have gone commercial to the point that guys listening to like Nu-metal would listen to them? Like none. I think mainstream folks would be put off by the long songs and all the acoustic passages and really, putting out albums like "Deliverance", that could never go commercial. Plus, is you watch the DVD, he says that he doesn't wanna go mainstream, so I think he has a good idea on how accessible they're getting.

Speak of the Devil Driver, those assholes DID in fact open up for Opeth when I saw them in New York last year. I didn't think it could get any worse and then Moonspell played after Devil Driver. By the time Opeth came on I was pissed at music in general and had spent $25 on rum and cokes to ease my suffering... Luckily Opeth ruled and I left in a good mood. |

It's not so much fucking up the music i'm afraid of, RR has a long history of under-promoting and abandoning great band halfway trough the contract in favour of more populair bands.

With all of the buzz about Opeth on this website, I figured I'd listen to some song clips. Maybe I just chose the wrong ones, but Opeth seems like a melodic band with some rock in it rather than anything near metal. Where does your fascination come in with them? Maybe some album and/or song recommendations for me to try out? Because all I can seem to find on them is melodic bullshit. Hopefully that's not offensive around here (hammering on Opeth, that is). And if it is, sorry. I retreat and "take it back".  |

they mix death metal, a touch of black(on the earlier albums), and progressive rock. you should listen to deliverance, demon of the fall, the leper affinity, or serenity painted death if you want some heavier stuff.

I figure the clips are from Deliverance and Damnation, wich altough they are decent albums, are relativly Opeth's worst. Try stuff from Blackwater Park, Still Life or My arms, Your hearse. If you listened to one of those whole album's and it doesn't do anything to you, chances are Opeth isn't your thing.

Opeth are a very in between band. Death metallers think they're too soft, and prog rockers think they're too heavy. There are, however, appreciaters of both types of music that adore Opeth. If you're a death metaller who hates soft music and prog rock then Opeth probably aren't for you.

Im a death metaller and I fuckin cant stand prog rock/metal. Dream Theater, Symphony X, shit like that makes me want to vomit. But I do like Opeth.

'conventional' progresive metal bands (like Dream theater) are quite different from the more 'experimental' progresive bands. There should be a distinction between these two, since conventional progresive is more of a very technical spacy sounding power metal.

Yes, we're getting flamed for signing to RR. People think we're sellouts and that our album will suck. Nice! I've always wondered when we'd get accused of that.
Thing is the album would have sounded the same had we been signed to Martin Mendez label "Los diablos records".
To be honest, I'm not into the bands they put out nowadays either but to me RR is a METAL label. Deicide, Obituary, King Diamond, Slayer (in Europe), Mercyful fate + all the guitar hero records of the 80´s. Some people are simply too young to remember that RR has been around forever.
And we didn't pick them because of the money. We got some other financially fantastic (I'm talking millions of kronor) offers, but when all is said and done I want our album to be available everywhere which is why we chose RR.
Hand on heart do you truly believe we'd compromize our sounds for anyone or anything? I'd bitchslap any outsider trying to interfere with our vibes!
Hope you're good by the way! I'm doing vocals (screams) and solos (cock rock style) today and one song is mixed.

Well, they officially signed with Road Runner. The new album will be out late august, early september according to their web site.
