Various Effects

I own a Boss digital delay, but I've been looking at various effects and i don't really undrstand what they do. What exactly is a flanger, a Phase shifter, a tremolo, and an Octave?

read the rules and post in the gear forum next time mate. to end your suffering:

a flanger is an effect that resembles the noise of a plane going overhead. while still retaining the same pitch, you get an effect of the sound going up and down. it's extremely cool when used sparingly.

i won't make an arse out of myself and pretend i know what the phase shifter and tremolos do exactly. an octave simply just shifts the octave. eg if you set it on "up one octave"

you play:

------
------
------
------
------
-6----

you hear:

------
------
------
-8----
------
------

go to www.harmony-central.com and look up fx and what they do... you'll get in depth explanations and examples.

I'd say a phaser sounds more like a plane going overhead than flanger. A flanger is essentially a faster phaser, and chorus is an even faster flanger.

The Boss octave pedal adds up to two octaves lower down, so if you played a C4, you'd get a C3, and a C2 if you wanted it

As far as the trem pedal goes, I think it just adds a vibrato effect, although I've never heard one so I can't commit to that comment

hah, none of you have any idea whats going on so I'll explain.

there are generally 3 types of pedals: distortion, oscillation, and wah.

Distortion takes your smooth roundish wave thing and makes it spiky.

oscillation encompasses Chorus, Phase Shifting and Flangers.
Basicaly what they do is they split your wave into 2, delay one of the waves a little bit, and puts it back together. It gives you this funky swoooshy sound.

Wahs just increase the amount of treble in the signal.

tremolo is a fucked up pedal in that it just takes chunks out of the solid note so you get a stuttering sound... Rage Against the Machine uses it alot. its kinda like when you fuck up when driving a standard transmission car... you feel like you're getting thrown back and forth and want to puke.

What are you talking about? A wah is an active mid-sweep control with a range far greater than the 'mid' pot on your amp. If you've ever played about with a mid-sweep pot on a mixing desk, you'll understand that a wah is pretty much the same

Your 'distortion' category was supposed to be named 'gain', by the way. And distortion doesn't make a wave 'spiky' at all, the act of overdriving a signal in such a way causes the peaks to flatten as they overload the pre-amp, creating a square-wave full of odd harmonics

that's the most retarded and inaccurate explaination i've heard.

2 waves? maybe if it's only a two voice pedal... some things like a rocktron intellifex have as much as 8 voice effects.

"funky swooshy sound"?

a wah is a type of filter that you can simply adjust with your foot via expression pedal... when set at different spots it will sweep out different frequencies...

so it doesnt "increase" much of anything at all... it "actually sweeps out".

tremelo just takes your signal and fades in and out at a set pace and intensity. kinda like if you strum a chord.. then rapidly swell your volume knob up and down.

you've been offically owned.

Correct me if im wrong but I think chorus is where you take your signal and split into several voices and each voice gets a little different pitch.
