Has anyone played an Explorer bass?

Has any one played this or its Gibson counterpart? If so, would you recommend it?

I wouldn't recommend any bass with an explorer body. I bet the balancing is horribly uncomfortable, and for me that's reason enough not to buy (unless it was a really good bass).

I say do away with it. You can always stand in its former location if you need to make use of the perspective it gave you, but will benefit from the ability to situate yourself in different loci with ease.
Destroy the box.

I've played them. Gibson made a few. Ibanez made a "lawsuit" version in the late 70's. Hamer made them (typically the "Blitz" model--think Ric Savage from Def Leppard). Alembic makes them.

I thought they balanced well. Mine was not too heavy.

Tone and neck probably depends on the bass.

They're somewhat hard to find.

FYI--the case is a bit long due to the scale length and the "wing" off the back. Won't fit in a standard gig bag.

I've played the gibson explorer one and the balance of that one was horrible...

not too heavy is right but it just didn't feel right, try them out and see for yourself.
