down tunning (not what you think)
who are the bands that first started to downtune in metal or in music as a whole?
was it sabbath? i know toni had to tune down cause of his fingers is that were it all started or were there band pre-sabbath that downtuned?
venom is one of the earliest bands i can think of that tuned to c#

I think quite a number of bands came before sabbath. doesn't deep purple use some downtuning?

hendrix used to play in Eb (all the time i think), but theres examples of downtuned guitars right back to old classical music.

Oh yeah. Isn't Open C a tuning used primarily for classical guitar? I think I heard about that somewhere. Not really sure.

I didn't think so, but it might be true.
i play a classical nylon string thing, which is tuned to concert pitch, but have often come across musical pieces which require you to tune down. either the bottom string or the whole thing or any variation.
as far as sitars go I have no idea.

In popular music, the beatles were the first to downtune. They used drop-D on some song, forgot the name.
