Dreamtime Poem
yes, a song, by everybodys favourite racist, about "aboriginal mythology" if you like. no matter how much i hate the way aboriginals these days act, i still find the dreamtime stories extremely interesting and it will always get my attention. anyway, try this one for size. it's not very good, but it may improve.
40,000 years ago, a single burrah [kangaroo] with a little joey
hopped dutifully around, searching for grass
as the red went on eternally, the burrah was weak
during the dry season, as tucker disappeared fast
but the search was over with a patch by the waterhole
as the burrah chewed its long-deserved food
feeding her baby, another day survived
a full stomach and she was in a better mood
but suddenly all was not well, as the humans came
as she was speared, the hunter now the hunted
lower in the food chain, not a fun experience
as her right to life was rudely shunted
the djurriwurris sat around the campfire eating tucker
their elders telling stories of what lay among the night sky
the fire burned warm during the chilly nights
this was the tribe you wanted to be a member until you die
however it was not all fun and stories for these people
for water also was scarce during the red days
searching and hunting for their vital survival
or the famine weakness would eventually have its ways
but when they got to their long-awaited destination
they found a snake had swallowed up the waterhole!!
this was no ordinary serpent on the other hand
and having no water would very soon take its toll
so the elders hatched a clever plan to trick the beast
so all could share the liquid of life
the plan was so clever that they could not figure it out themselves
thirst amongst their people was rife
then the plan fell into place and the snake was slayed
as the tribe cheered and hailed for their elders idea
for as well as the water to help them stay alive
there was now a month of food, and they didn't have to fear
the beast which now adorned their campsite area
a proud achievement in their long history
their name would be heard and their dominance known for years to come
as the name itself heard, you think "VICTORY!!!!"

From an American's point of view that was quite interesting, but the one thing I'd have liked to have read was the "how" of the snake scene. Even if the story behind it was obscure there must still be some variations of how it was done. It might require a little research on your part, but I think it would be worth it.
I liked this from a cultural sharing viewpoint. The usage of words not common to me and the way you explained them within the piece was pretty cool.
Nice job.

thing is bobbi, i'm not an aboriginal elder, therefore i couldn't hatch a plan i'm not good with plans, like in my poem about the chinese emperor, that also lacked a plan but i'll see what i can do to fix something up. thanks muchly for the feedback.

Sure thing. You know when someone writes a piece like this it makes the world a little smaller.

Well, Neil Young did some cool stuff with Cortez the Killer and Powderfinger as far as relating cultural issues. Arlo Gurthrie has done his or his dad's songs that were stories with cultural overtones, too. I'd try to think of a few more, but I've been in the sun painting and I think I baked my brain.
Heck, there's probably a lot of people who would learn more about the world and it's history in a musical format. I know kids that can't read well or don't like to, but give them a good jam and they're all over it. That was probably the logic behind School House Rock back in the day.
In a slightly different medium, if you've ever watched Monty Python's Holy Grail movie you've gotten a warped, but somewhat accurate history lesson. lol Takes all kinds.
