Help: Tone for recording
My band recently went to a friends place to record a demo. We did 7 songs in like 2 hours. needless to say, we're going back to re-record it properly. I noticed that my guitar tone was extremely horrible. Its just fuzz. I need a more distinctive, fuller tone.
I play death metal, and need a melodic, crunchy sort of tone.
This is what i've got to work with: Ibanez Rg 42, metalzone (sore) DI'd (even more sore) into a behringer Eurodesk and out into the PA. I might be able to play through his Laney bassman (i think) amp and maybe use his boss chorus, ds-1, delay pedals but he didn't seem too keen on me using the amp. Is there any way I can get a decent tone? I'm willing to sacrifice a bit of gain for a better tone. I use slightly cut mids, low on about 2 or 3 o'clock and treble just below.
DONT tell me to buy an amp, because where i live (South Africa) musical equipment is extremely expensive. A 5150 combo amp is like R10 000, around 700 dollars.
Any help will be appreciated.
cheers

700 dollar for an 5051 combo is not bad deal. You can forget having a good tone recorded if you DI a crappy pedal as your pre-amp.

scoop the mids...cut the lows and highs. its the mids that'll tear through the mix.

Cut your distortion, too, cause too much distortion will fuzz up the recording big style. Cranking the gain through an amp sounds good when you're sitting halfway across the room from it, but when you close-mic the amp, it sounds horrible
Why won't he let you use his amp? He can't be much of an engineer if he's insisting that you DI guitar...

If you're stuck with a PA and low cash, you need something along the lines of a used Digitech RP-10 or similar processor off of e-bay that has a cabinet emulator, eq, reverb, delay, distortion. You'll still be better off cranking that through the PA and mic'ing it instead of DI. But it would be better if you look around for someone who you can rent or borrow some good gear from.

I find that I get fuzz when the mids are too low and the treble is too high. try lower the treble and upping the mids.

if youre recording digitally , ive noticed the signal always gets more distorted. so, play with not enough distortion to your ear, and you should find that the recording sounds more distorted than what you heard.
add some reverb for body, avoid effects, even if they are off, in your signal. some of them color your tone unwantedly
and you might be able to find a music sotre that retns amps for like 50 bucks a day or something. think about it , is that worth it to you? depends if youll be seleling these demos or what. totally up to you
