i listened to them when toxicity first came out, cause my other band mates raved about them.. but soon after it just annoyed the shit out of me. and i've heard the song "Cigaro" on the radio.. i'd nominate that for the gayest fucking nu-metal song ever, it just so stupid.. how can they be taken seriously..?

I can't imagine "Cigaro" being played on the radio. They tread the line between conventional song structure and avante-garde melodicism on their previous 3 albums, and now they've fluctuated permanently into the deep end 
I've always carried the burden of actually liking System Of A Down. On an internet forum such as this ( or around your friends ), if you like System Of A Down, you must also profess your love for at least ten underground extreme metal bands to stay safe. So here goes :

2. Suffocation
3. Deicide
4. Gorguts
5. Bloodba ...
Eh, forget it.
I class System Of A Down as "relevant pop music". And I leave it at that.

I saw them at The Whiskey in like 1995 and they sounded alright then, but I can't stand the vocals on their albums. Unfortunately their worst songs (whiniest) like Toxicity get a lot of radio play around here for some reason and that anti-war video they came out with last year was fucking atrociously gay. Other than that they rock! (sort of)

I didn't even read every single reply, but all I can say is that their first album (self-titled) was a great album. Once Toxicity came out and people started liking them for that shit, that's what they were known for. And that's a bad thing. Toxicity had a few good songs on it, and I didn't even bother to listen to much of Steal This Album. But the first self-titled album had a lot of great songs on it--just not exactly metal, although it wasn't nu metal. The fact is, they do suck. They didn't suck, but now they do. Regardless, I don't like debating on what is metal and what is not. It degrades us to punks. We shouldn't have to fight for the label of "metal". So no, they're not real metal. Very creative and oddly talented nonetheless.

I didn't read anything in this whole thread, not even the first post.
I just want to say that I heard some good melodic metal riffs blasting through the stereo the other day while getting dropped off to work. about 1 minute later I recognised the vocals as SOAD. I was like "Holy fuck, have thses guys finally grown up?" Whether they have or not, it was a whole lot better than any nu metal I've heard.

I don't classify then as nu-metal. They are not nu-metal in any way. This is not to say that they are bad though... I like some of their songs. Most of their songs are hit or miss. Then there are some like Cigaro - the wierd ones.
They piss me off sometimes at the length of their songs. They have lots of songs that are under 2 minutes. I really dont like that about them.
