Enlarging the strings slots on my nut ...
I want to modify the nut of my Schecter to receive a set of Zakk Wylde GHS 60-10 gauge strings. I've heard that using a hacksaw is the most ideal method ... exactly how do I go about this?
Any response is appreciated.

I dunno what the nut is like, but i'd probably get a thin blade needle file, and just be careful... i think a hacksaw would be too heavy-handed, as you'd only be removing a very small amount of it.

Unless you have the experience to do this mod yourself, take it to someone who does. Also, that hacksaw would eat through it in a heartbeat. Stewmac.com sells nut files that are meant for this purpose. Get the files if you are intent on doing this yourself.

I made my own once from a block of metal using small jeweler's files (standard shit from hardware store). It's not that big of a deal but it takes some patience. Do not use a hacksaw...

I would think it would be able to handle 60's stock. it'll be a tight squeeze but i would think it's possible if you force it. I could be wrong though.

take it to the shop, there is more to it than just filing the slots down, you have to file them at a certain pitch, you need special tools, and unless you feel comfortable possibly fucking it up and spending the money to get the guitar fixed anyway, id just take it to the shop.

Seriously this is no big thing. It's just a nut and it can easily be replaced cheaply. Just be cautious and smart about it. If you fuck it up, so what. Paying professionals to do these things for you will only ensure that you never learn how to do it yourself (unless they're cool enough to explain it to you while they work).

Two questions:
1) Those of you playing on .11s and higher, did you all file your slots?
2) Are there types of nuts (don't even fucking start) out there that accept virtually any gauge? and if so, what are they called? and do any guitars come with them stock?

Shut up.... If he wants to file it down he can, do you have any idea what a .60 gauge string is going to do to his nut thats meant for lets say a standard .46 when you tighten the string, its gonna snap no matter what. If he really feels he needs to get rid of the zakk wylde strings and put some thin little 9's on there then he can get a new nut if he really wants to.

Fuck a hacksaw, when i got my 11's i just filed the nut down with the end of the string. IMO its really not nessisary to use any tools, the end of the string works fine for me, you just have to work at it for a little bit until you feel comfertable with the way it fits in there.
I just got a pair of the zakk Wylde Strings for my LP, and the nut is meant for 11's right now, but i havnt put the ZW's on yet, ill tell you how it goes when i do.

I've taken a piece of coarse sandpaper, folded it, and sanded down the slots. And I'm playing with a brand new set of ZW strings.
My dad, who plays bass, recommended a hacksaw . That was, in all seriousness, the first thing he said : "You could use a hacksaw". And he was totally sincere, the imbecile.

When puting two of my guitars side by side, ones headstock comes to about the same height as the others neck. But, in comparison, one nut is lower than the other. They both have the same size of a head, too.
So the head is pretty much level with the neck, but one nut is lower than the other.
Anybody else have this problem?
EDIT: No, wait. I think my eyes were just playing tricks on me. Eh, I can't really tell. Anyone care to come take a look at this? I'm starting to think one nut is bigger than the other. So maybe that's the problem...

This thread really only applies to slotted nuts for the most part.
Locking nuts generally have a triangular groove and will accept any size string (although if you don't tailor it specifically for your string size the string will be pinched more and the likelihood of breakage is increased).
Other nuts have a round groove similar to a Floyd Rose bridge launch and will accept any size string.
Here's a photo of my custom steel nut with round grooves that I made to replace a slotted nylon nut that totally sucked ass (and caused string buzz). It's a little rusty because I don't use this guitar much, but it still works awesome. The original was glued on, but I made 4-40 threaded holes in this one and bolted it on through the neck. Solid...
