how high?
[I think this thread belongs here.. sorry if it belongs in theory]
How high do you strap\hold your guitar? I notice that a lot of insanely good guitarists like Chuck Schuldiner, Muhammed from Necrophagist, Trey Azagthoth, Bill Steer, etc hold their guitars relatively high.. while others like Slash and Zakk Wylde seem to have them down at their waist. When i started holding mine higher, I got a lot better at playing.

you are such a fag.
why the hell would how high you hold your guitar have anything to do with music theory?
You are a fag.
Shut up.
And on such a generic question, it is expected for you to do a search. There was a thread about this not too long ago.

You should stay polite.....you'd stand out as RARE.....
Advice....
From now on don't take (seemingly) offensive posts too personal......this isnt real life.....I had to learn that myself and it's alot better since I did.
Just my opinion.

yeah that's good advice.. i really don't care. i enjoy the irony in that those who claim to go against the grain of society exhibit its same ugly traits on these message boards.

yes i'm a dumbass.. sorry i'm not an expert. maybe that's why i'm here to ask questions. if it feels good to put people down, you'll get what's coming to ya.
playing height might equal technique, which a newcomer might think is theory.. my mistake. fuck off.

..which makes me wonder if you have any idea what music theory is..
Playing height is preference not technique. Even if it was, technique is not theory.
I play with the bridge pickup at my belly button, and the neck tilted upwards. As I have stated in the other thread.

i sit down, put my strap on, and then make it just to long to hang when im sitting down.. so when i stand its about the same hight as i would sit down
i lik ethis a lot cuz then it feels the same standong as sitting down (wel almost)
and the 24th fret is easylie reachable 2

Sometimes, when I have a boner, the bridge is all the way down to my balls. That way, the ladies can't see when I get a little bit too excited.

in reply to that actual question of this thread, I'd have to note (as someone probably already did) that the height of the strap might be best judged by how you use your frethand/pickhand. Lower, your going to have some bending of your frethand wrist; higher, you'll have the bending of your pickhand wrist. Too high or too low can cause Carpel Tunnel Syndrome (or however the fuck you spell it). Although, luckily, it's not extremely likely.
Nonetheless, I keep my strap quite low. Looks better (in my opinion), and to release some of your frethand wrist-bending, just point the neck more upward.

yeah i agree.. down low seems to look kool and all, but i can't play for shit that way. i noticed that a lot of the insanely good guitarists held them higher, so i tried it, and i started playing much better.

for me, the point of holding the guitar higher is for better reach and control with my fret hand. if i hold it low and tilt the neck way up, then it would be harder for me to pick. i also like to avoid holding it too low because then i have to stand like james hetfield with hunchback posture. i guess we all do something different.

its all about preference
keeping it high means its easy for picking and i would say that is more suitable for metal guitarists who are shredding. I used to learn with it high just so i could get stuff at speed.
Keeping it low means its hard to pick stuff fast and so there its mainly chordal based e.g. that dickhead from rancid.
My guitar hangs over my genitals and the next tilted up, i find that it is comfortable to do everything and makes getting to the higher frets easier. I think an important thing is to keep your back straight when you are playing or you can get problems with it. No one wants to be a hunchback from playing guitar.

I have the guitar pretty low. the bridge pick up right over my balls. But I like it that way. My wrist is used to it.

I know what you're talking about on how James stands, but I don't consider that uncomfortable. I actually do that naturally. I can't seem to stand straight up. It just doesn't seem right. I kind of get in that half-way kneeling stance. It seems to fit better with real heavy music.

heh, nice.. i'd like to think that if someone said that to me, i would just play until they shut the fuck up, but since i'm not that good yet, i'd just have to tear their face off instead.
