zakk wylde les paul
hey
this is just for the bls ozzy osbourne fans
okay i guess thats all you guys.
is there any reason why zakk put's his strings over the top of the tail piece on his les pauls rather than through i dont mean the tune 0 matic i mean
the one below that the tail piece./
the only thing i think it would do is make the strings completely straight up to the neck.
much appreciated any knowledge is welcome

I'd think that it'd give more sustain, due to the straightening of the string, and because of this, there is less contact between the strings and the bridge, so they'll keep vibrating longer methinks.

More sustain, less string tension.. less string breakage.

No.
He also does it so he can pull off a neat harmonic effect were he rakes the strings behind the bridge. Listen to "Superterrorizer" and 40 seconds in you'll hear it.

If it really accomplishes that, I'm going to have to do that to my guitar.

also if you look at the picture attached has he only done this method with
the EAD and the E string.

No, cause Zakk would just raise the bridge.

yea i just strung up my LP like that a while ago and its pretty sweet, i asked my guitar teacher about it, he was saying zakk wasnt the first one to do it, it was some older guitarist before him, and ive noticed a differant feeling when bending the strings now that i have it strung that way. I emailed my teacher about the faq's on stringing it that way cause he told me a bunch of reasons why this one guy did it, so once he reply's ill post up some of the facts/opinions.

i dont know wether you have already seen the picture attached by
BLS but you cannot get any clear than that picture.
basically you stick the string under and over.

well, if its string thru body, then you cant do anything special with it. It needs a tail piece.
I will be doing this to my project guitar; I have a tunomatic with a tail piece which will be the bridge.

This is what my guitar teacher said:
Duane Allman was the player I mentioned, but I think
Jim Hall's LP was set up the same, and he used that
from ~58-61.
Tone-wise, stringing over the top of the tailpiece
reduces the tension on the bridge. This decreased
tension can make the guitar sound somewhat warmer, and
may change the quality of the sustain (usually making
it warmer as well). Some players think that the
increased contact with the tailpiece also increases
the sustain, but I find that this is primarilly due to
the tailpiece being adjusted tight into the guitar's
top.
As for feel, because the strings path is much
straighter it is easier for the string to pass over
the saddle, making bending feel smoother. This may
also help aleviate tuning problems caused by strings
binding at the bridge.
Still, I only string one of my tune-o-matics over the
top. On the other guitars I prefer the slightly better
clarity of the standard method, and I want to avoid
wear marks caused by the strings.
