Kevin Talley Drum DVD
I just ordered one of them off Ebay. I've never heard of the guy, but he listed off a whole shwack of bands that he's played for. (chimaira drummer, formerly of dying fetus, misery index, suffocation) Apparently the drum video includes techniques for practicing double bass, blast beats, keeping better time, writing drum parts, what to practice, how to practice, and other important things a drummer should know.
What do you think? I never heard of him, but I never followed any of those bands. I only 15 bucks including shipping, so I don't think I couldv'e gone wrong.

He is fucking amazing, he recorded "Killing on Adrenline" when he was 17 and he did the "Despise the Sun" Suffocation tour when he was like 18 or something. I love his drum work, his fills are amazing and he writes drums to really play off the guitar riffs.

Anyway, now I have something to look forward to. I'm pumped.

Let me know what it's like when it comes. I've ordered one too, but I'm in the UK so it'll probably take about 4 years to turn up.
Looking forward to it, though.. I like the sound of it.

Cool.
Either way I'm pretty pumped. This will be the first drum instruction that I've ever had, so it should do me some good.

Got it today and it's pretty cool to watch him. To be honest, I've seen bits of the Roddy video and I think that's got more useful practice techniques and stuff and is better thought out. But that said I'm more into Talley's style and it's good to see him jamming (including breaking sticks and missing cymbals - just like the rest of us!) and it's got some cool useful stuff like what faces to make when you're playing a blast.
I bought it to pick up tips on how to make my double shit faster, and I doubt very much it will. What I've found that I really like to do is just watch him jam and see how fluid he is around the kit and stuff, I think that'll be more use to me than any of the rest of it. I also liked his very simple but actually pretty useful tips on writing bits for your drum fills and grooves.
One thing I should mention is that he's obviously had a hand in producing the thing himself, like my copy is signed and stuff. Now I'm pretty sure he doesn't need the odd few pennies he must have made out of it, so I assume he's doing it purely to help drummers develop - got to admire him for that.

Depends how big the files are. I think somewhere like megaupload.com can handle about 250MB at a time for free. Some formats will zip pretty well and save space.

Execrator, I don't mean to offend you, but I have to say this-
Yeah, the guy put it out and all that, but it's really just some basement footage of him talking about drums, and playing some stuff. It's pretty un-proffesional. I think he's stoned during most of it, but I could be wrong.
It wouldn't bother me to pirate the thing, mostly 'cuz he's already recorded yet another one as of July 2005.
CrsipyKid, my home-boy- I would like to hook you up, but until I get a DVD burner I can't. I'll let you know when I can do it.

I bought the same DVD from him from eBay, he also has another DVD that shows him practicing/auditioning with Slayer when they were looking for a drummer, that one is pretty cool, but he doesn't play the parts like Dave Lombardo; I'm sure that's why he didn't get the gig. Besides those are some pretty big shoes to fill.
The Technique DVD that you bought is ok, it basically shows him going off on the drums, not a whole lot of instruction per se. The quality is also lacking, but all in all you won't find anything else out there, that shows you how to play this style on the drums.

Kevin was over here in Stockholm/Märsta in 02 and recorded an album with some friends of mine. Soils Of fate, the album is called Crime Syndicate. He truely is amazing! Both when it comes to blast beats, fills, dubble bass and grove. He´d learn 10 songs in three days. I shoot everything when they rehearsed and I was just blown away! No drummer in Sweden will ever get close to his standard.
And he is fun partying with... A great dude! Both as person and as drummer.

Here's the Chapters on the Slayer DVD:
1. Chimaira in Australia - Sept 2004 - "Severed" & "Cleansation"
2. Slayer Audition/Jam March of 2002
3. Dimebag Drives Kevin's Car at Billy Milano's B-Day Bash in Dallas, May 2001
4. Dying Fetus in Europe With the Destroy the Opposition Linup
5. Misery Index - Live shots & Studio footage - 2004
Also for Chapter 2 the song list consists of:
1. God Hates Us All - Kevin Nails This Song
2. War Ensemble
3. Tour of Equipment and practice room; complete with German WWII propaganda Posters and Flags - Must see
4. Chemical Warfare
*That has to be a rush to be playing with Slayer - chance of a lifetime
Also you can definately see a transformation in Kevin's playing when you look at his playing in 2002 compared to his playing in 2004.
Hey Execrator I tried sending you a PM, but you need to create some space. I also sent you an email.

yeah, kevin looked like a homo if you ask me. good drummer, but he lacked the self confidence of roddy or culross. basically, he looked like an up and comer and not a cocky and excellent player

My thoughts exactly, I think his adrenaline was getting the best of him. It sounded like he was rushing that song. But on the God Hates Us All track, he did much better. I couldn't tell in the video if they liked him or not. There was one point where it looked like Jeff H. shook his head during chemical warfare, I don't know what that was about.
One more thing, anyone else play with their hi-hat that high? It looks like his hi-hat is almost up to his neck, maybe it was the camera angle. LOL!

Don't get me wrong I'm not ripping on Kevin. I don't believe in doing that to other players, especially players that are way better than I such as Kevin. I like Kevin and respect him, I actually learned a great deal from his instructional Vid.
One thing that really sticks out for me in the instructional DVD is he said "you have to really learn to keep time with your left foot". "Learning to keep time with your left foot will help you with your double bass and independence." Most of us keep time with our right foot, partly because our right hand keeps the time/pulse and our right hand and right foot are interconnected with each other. In other words our right foot likes to do what our right hand does. I read that Dave Lombardo even likes to lead with his left when doing double bass parts.
In Kevin's Defense that was back in 2002, On that same DVD he has live footage of him in the Studio, and he totally nails the song. You can definately tell he has grown as drummer and takes his drumming seriously, you have to respect that.

I don't quite follow that - are you saying you think you shouldn't lead with your right foot, or just that you think he's contradicting himself?
I've always (until recently, anyway) played a single bass pedal, and I found it very good practice to keep time with your left foot. It teaches you a certain amount of independance, and does keep your fills and stuff on track. The stuff I play these days is faster and has more double shit for my left foot to do so I've got out of the habit a bit, but I still naturally do it for long fills and little fancy solo bits.
Also, Lombardo is left-handed, but plays a right-handed kit - that's why he leads with his left foot a lot of the time. I know a kid locally who's the same and he just doesn't understand what I mean when I talk about my "weak foot" or "weak hand". Both of his are strong and he's got amazing control. Makes me wonder about setting up a left handed practice kit for some all-round.. er.. no, actually. Fuck that.

I was saying just that, it is a good idea to learn to keep time with the left, it's something I need to work on more. I'm also left handed but I play a right handed drum set, but that's the way I started out so my right side is more dominant then my left so I lead with my right with everything.
Come to think of it I've never tried to play left handed, I'll think I will try it out, but right now my right hand is faster than my left because I have always used my right hand for time keeping (Hi-Hat/Ride). Thanks for the food for thought.

i too did not know too much about him until i found his instructional dvd on ebay, and he got it professionaly printed up now. i messaged him and he told me he has 4 dvds total: instructional, dying fetus live, misery index live, and his slayer audition. the cool thing is that you are buying them directly from him. just email him at ebaykevintalley@yahoo.com and he will sell you all 4 for a package price. the dvds are worth it. it is cool to have dvds for metal drumming because there are not too many out there.
