Metal types
Call me stupid, but I still couldn't realize exactly what defined each style of metal. I understand the main differences between genres, but sometimes I find quite hard to distinguish death metal from some black metals (even though I'm sure of the differences in some certain bands but I can't tell some others whether they're black or death).
Apart from these, I keep asking myself: What is power metal? It can easily be confused with thrash by me.
Maybe it's stupid to ask these, but one should know when he's interrested...

Yeah and every person has different opinions about grouping bands into these types.

More like 2 types of metal:
Metal you like
Metal you don't
There is no definitive good and bad, and poserism has nothing to do with how good the music is.
But to actually answer your question, death metal generally has deeper vocals with a "pits of hell" feel, and black metal has high screach kind of vocals with a "frozen nordic winter" feel and has lots of temelo picking.....I know those definitions suck, I just want to be as simple as possible.
Power metal and thrash aren't really that different sounding as black and death metal, power metal is ecessentially speed metal with ideas you would find in a final fantasy game and medival times, and clean emotional sounding vocals.

Power metal has more this fantasy "heavy metal" feel to it, thrash metal is more "chunky" and has lots of palmmuting of the E string

i find the biggest differences between black and death to be lyrical content, vocal style(deep growl vs. raspy growl), and guitar style and sound
death metal is typically about gorier subjects, whereas black metal is more about religion and being grim
death metal typically has the deeper, more gutteral growls, whereas black metal has raspier and higher pitched screamy type growl
death metal is typically more tehnical then black metal, with a few exceptions(mortician), death metal is also more disjunct in its note choice, whereas black metal has, from what i have listened to, lots of strummed power chords, LOTS of tremolo picking, and an overall simpler playing style than death metal
death metal TYPICALLY opts for a very heavily distorted sound with lots of lows and mids, whereas black metal opts for a thinner, buzzy distortion with LOTS of reverb.

Black Metal has higher pitched vocals than Death Metal and uses less bass. I could go on about the difference in Black Metal/Death Metal image, style and persona but I think you are just asking about sound, right?

Black Metal - Raspy, gravelly, screaming/shrieking vocals, riffing guitars.
Death Metal - Gutteral growling vocals with dominated powerchords/riffing guitars. Blastbeats aplenty.
Grindcore - Punk in fast forward with blastbeats and Death Metal vocals. Music is often very very fast riffing or easy bullshit. This is hard to define in words, but to hear it is without mistake.
Metalcore - If it's not quite hardcore but not quite emo, its metalcore.
Hardcore - Shouldn't really belong in the world of metal, but imagine blunt palm muted guitar lines and shouted vox.
Heavy Metal - Whats something harder than rock? Hmm... I know, Metal! Bands like Pantera and Black Sabbath.
Thrash - A step up from heavy metal. bands include Slayer, Sepultura, Metallica etc.
Power Metal - Fast drumming with normally easy guitar lines which are often soaked in complex solo's and stuff. Power metal vocals sound like a castrated guy singing.
That's about it I guess.

Main difference is, of course, in lyrical content. Death metal's primary theme, is obviously Death, while Black metal's primary target is the inacceptance of religion and the advent of ancientness. Death metal is a brutal music that frees our empty souls from the world we are lliving in a suicidal way, and prepares the suicidal process by bypassing all second thoughs, and making us accept Death as something we always wanted, and now happens. Death metal can be realistic some times (Early Therion, realism oposed to romantic) but Black metal is usually romantic and creates a heavy, mourning athmosphere, filled with dark, empty thoughs, in witch you can drown your imagination in a masochist way. Death metal is very "technical", usually the mids are higher in a Death metal band than in Black, and very well defined. Death can also be attonal, opposed to Black' melodicism.

What does it have to do with being cool? I didnt ask to be cool. I asked for answers. So what, you could find mostly anything else on the net. forums would be useless, and forums are still a better way to DISCUSS `em, man!!

Yeah I mean, fuck, you can't understand what Beherit is saying even if someone fucking tells you what Holocausto is saying. But it's still very obviously Black Metal. I'd say image has more of an impact than lyrics.
