I rarely have little to offer HOWEVER......recently was discussing this with a few friends....they know I have no goals as far as professional musician.....but among themselves were discussing the biggest market isnt stage metal performers but studio musicians.....making music for various ads....shows.....commercials...soundtracks.....things of that nature. Seems ones best chance would be to steer towards this area of music.
Were they correct? I'm not sure....but it sounded tangible to me.

It is EXTREMLY hard to become a sesion musician. I know Daniel Mongrain from Martyr is now a session musician, he stated in an interview it was VERY hard to get to where he is. Going to a school will not gauntee you anything at all. He graduated from a very elite school in Canada and is now studying Jazz Interpretation. But I know in this field of work when you go to get a job yo have to be able to go in and play whatever they hand you from sheet music without knowing what it is. Plus it is a very VERY competitive field. Not only do you ahve to have incrediclbe playing skills but you ahve to have a very very good ear for melody composition. You need natural talent and a huge work ethic.

What's the biggest difference in going to like this Musicians institute, compared to like Berkelee, aside from the fact that it's a much bigger school.

the MI is in hollywood, ca ...
as for the differences, i'm not sure i know enough about it to be much help, but from a glance it seems like MI is really geared towards helping you with job placement and experience in the industry... i don't know, what do you other guys think...

Attending it, i'll be majoring in Music Production and Engineering. I just filled out the application and got accepted. the application was a pain though, they ask a lot of questions and you have to do 3 essays, but it's worth it.

Do ya plan on going there? academincally i wasn't the best. i had a B average if i'm lucky. i got a 1050 on my SAT's, my instrument is guitar, i've been playing for 4 years, i have a decent knowledge of basic theory, and i can write a damn good essay. Applying early, like in November/early December is important too since they have rolling admissions.

Pshh, I'm such an idiot, I just noticed that the Hollywood musicians institute that I live near, is THE institute this whole thread is about. I'm still wondering how good this institute is, to anyone that knows about it. Knowing that Berkelee is one of the top music colleges, I'm considering it, but it's completely on the other side of the country.

As far as I know, the guys from Dream Theater all went to Berkeley. If you know who I'm talking about I don't think I need to get into their musicianship, talent, and skills. It's pretty much common knowledge.

i was just reading that MI is having one of those one week sessions at the end of june, you know where you get to take lessons from some of their faculty, and participate in open jams and workshop stuff... it sounds pretty cool...i've never been to one of those type of things, do you think it's worth it? i imagine it's awesome fun if nothing else!

Go for it. If nothing else, you'll probably meet some potential bandmembers with similar vision.

i think i like the idea of MI because they expect you to focus 100% on playing and nothing else, you dont have to worry about liberal arts or general studies you know? you're there to study music, and thats what you do...

I really want to go to Berklee too because they specialize in modern music. Unfortunately, I don't know if it'll be likely, cuz it's really fucking expensive, and I'd be having to move to the other side of the country.

I live literally a twenty minute train ride from berklee.
I'm definately planning to go there. However i HOPE HOPE HOPE i get a decent scholarship for that place.
I have a full ($7000) scholarship to my high school...so maybe i can get something based on academic merit from other scholarship associations. (Berklee only gives out musical merit bases scholarships)
