It's a little tough to say. For starters, what exact effects pedal are you using? And as a second question, by "sketchy" and "not that nice metal sound" what do you mean? A shitty guitar, amp, or effects pedal (or all three combined) can give a sound that may not be a "nice metal sound". Of course, try fucking around with the EQ on the amp first. Try all effects the pedal has. And if you're looking for a particular type of metal sound, you may need to tune your guitar differently. Is it in standard tuning? That higher tuning sometimes doesn't work good for certain metal sounds. And to answer the question simply, try the amp without the effects. If it sounds okay, then obviously the pedal is the ugly duckling. Shit. My brain isn't up for this. You'll probably get flamed again anyway. Hope I helped a little.

I've got a Digitech RP200. It kicks major ass. Alot great stuff on there. And it should be pretty low in price compared to some others. I've never tried the RP50, though. Or, wait...I think I may have. Anywho, from what I recall, the RP200 would probably be alot better for you (or anybody, for that matter).

Eh....I'm personally not fond of single effects pedals. But alot of people use them. They can have a pretty good sound, but I've never liked using batteries--even though I think most of them now can be powered by an adapter. If you just want one good tone, then sure, nothing wrong with a single pedal. Just make sure it gives the sound you want. Usually, a good-sounding pedal will fix a bad-sounding amp. I do think the RP200 would be a pretty penny higher than the RP50, but it'd be worth it. I can't remember how much mine ended up costing, but I'm a cheap buyer if there ever was one. So it shouldn't be more than the wallet can handle, but whatever fits you best. Check out the price of the RP200, and if it's too high, there's always good single pedals for under 100 bucks.

Well, Norther, I'd imagine there are some pretty good ones. I just don't really know of any. I'm not much of an effects guy. Although the POD ProLine 6 (or whatever the fuck its called) is supposed to be great. I'm just not sure how its used. But I played with one in a store and it was pretty good.

I have no idea. I've seen some ads in guitar magazines for some pretty popular ones, but I can't remember. I'd recomend just going down to your music dealer and try out each distortion pedal they have. Whichever one sounds best and is a good enough price for you, buy it.

Line 6 is great for digital, but when you use them live they're only mediocre. I'm a big Boss fan (I use a GT-6 most often, has everything I need and more). Digitech is kinda hit or miss, their distortion sounds very "fake" to me (I have a GNX4 but never use it). Zone is shite. Behringer makes some good stuff for reasonable prices. My friend has a VOX effects processor, I love it, its superb. The Toneworks Pandora is a fancy little piece of work. Its a small box that can fit in your pocket that has something like 120 effects, I was going to get one, but never got around to it.

Yes! They're bloody great.
Here's my setup:
Guitar --->Digitech DM-----> Digitech DM-----> Digitech DM-----> Amp.
That's what all the great metal bands use.

dude digitech metal master for teh win, 3 of those are soo good, so much better than death metal. Basically all the bands you like use pedals for their distortion, they say they use their amps but its all a lie. Go to a guitar center and try all the pedals for the most hardcore sound.
Idiot.
