it balances out the guitar signal, making your softer playing louder, and your louder playing softer, so it sounds nicer, it doesn't affect the tone really, just the volume.

A compressor literally compresses the signal. An uncompressed guitar note will have a large initial volume attack and then fade out quickly. With max compression it becomes the same volume from the time you hit the string all the way until the note dies out entirely. It makes your guitar sound like it has killer sustain. Compressing prior to a distortion effect (which is just a different form of compression) makes the distortion more consistent sounding.
Compression is also used for listening devices in the "spy" world and on broadcast radio. You'll notice if you listen carefully to rock stations that the volume dynamics of bands like Pink Floyd are less noticeable than on the actual albums. This is so there is never "dead air" on the radio when listening at low volumes.
But next time, gear talk...

But if everyone should think that way there would be no use for the other forums and we could just throw everything on 1 pile.

If everyone thought that way, I'd be a fool not to.
