Congrats D&Q'd. Good luck at the training. What's the difference between airborne and air assault? Gonna get to go to jump school??? I'd love to get to go to that...if I can get my ass in tip top shape I am going for EOD and will get to do jump school as well as fast rope from helos! It's a tough bit of training though. Who knows..
Our deployment is winding down, still have some time left to go though...another couple months or so. We're in Bodrum, Turkey right now, it's really nice here. Though I hear Norfolk, VA is great this time of year!

Right now, I'm about to have my OOD (Officer of the Deck) board in about a week which will be my last qualification before I have my SWO (Surface Warfare Officer) board to get my SWO pin. http://www.militarytimes.com/blogs/.../05/swo-pin.gif I should have the SWO board knocked out before July is over with. I cannot wait! It will be a huge load off my chest since that is a first tour Officer's primary goal. After that I'll be working on EOOW (Engineering Officer of the Watch) so that I can have that qual and also get more negotiating power for my next orders...trying to either go to Mayport, FL or go into the Riverines...if neither of those then Hawaii or Japan.

Norfolk sucks. Hubby always said too many sailors. lol "Dogs and sailors keep off the grass." Maybe it's changed from when my husband was there.

Ehh doesn't sound like it's changed. Norfolk is tired of Sailors and their associated shit...though they would feel the hurt if we all up and left. The monetary impact is something that has been taken for granted I think. Then again, I've only been in VA for 6.5 months out of the almost 2 years I've lived there.

There was a base in New England that booted the Navy out and all but collapsed. I think they allowed the port back because they lost so much money. If a base the size of Norfolk closed up Virginia would probably be in a world of hurt.

I just got back now. Airborne is parachuting from planes, air assault is rappeling from choppers. I completed my training fully qualified, but my gpa may not be good enough to go active duty. I still can get a scholarship if I sign though.

Well, do what you need to do. A scholarship wouldn't be half bad though if you don't make it to active. Bloom where you're planted and soak up the experiences.

I remember them being kinda cool at first playing ball on the street and being curious. Next thing we know they started calling us "fish" or something and rocks being thrown. Great times! It's kinda cool to think we both walked in the same far away places, although your adventure began just as my service ended. Thus is the tradition of Naval service
You also know Navy uniform regs do not allow active duty Sailors to aquire body modification to include tattoos without first being aproved ( which never happens ). Lets just assume the tattoo design you "sketched" was for a civilian or Sailor's future referance after they leave Naval service, right
Regardless, I'm happy to see you have really come along way. Cheers to you.
I don't mean to end this on a negitive note but it sucks about what happened in Labanon. At least you were there to do something. I'm sure there are a lot of thankful people glad you could recover what you did.

The whole Lebanese thing was definitely interesting. Their media wound up turning on us after we left..kinda strange but I guess stranger things have happened. Then again, it wasn't even their mainstream media, more the radical groups. I mean really, we just helped find the wreckage and recover parts..we didn't shoot them down or anything.
haha yea, definitely have come a ways since I started posting in this thread. Not sure how it feels though, in regards to time. Seems like time is going by fairly quickly but at times it definitely goes by slowly. Probably because our ship is underway all the time.

It always made me wonder how people could turn on each other so fast. It blows my mind but I know it happens in America too. If you remember how I talked about the children in Naples playing ball, they thought westerners were interesting at first and talked with us. 5 minites later one of them starts going ape shit yelling about something and calling us something that sounded like "fish". I bearly know Italian from my grandmother so I only got parts. It only took less than a minute before the other kids started to do it too. It doesn't take long to get the idea that you are becoming a target and not wanted. I never thought children would treat people this way. We all just walked away before any adults decided they wanted to get on the lynching. People followed us for a few blocks and several rocks were thrown at us. Nothing really damaging hit us but I knew there was no where to go ( narrow streets ) and get help if shit hit the fan. We just played it cool and walked. We all agreed to never officially report it but did spread word about being alone deeper in the city. Needless to say, we were all very careful after that. The buddy system works for a reason.
Sometimes I hate being a part of the human race.

Ahhh not a good story. I think that are the lovely stereotypes that these kids were taught since their cradle-time.
But hey take it easy, I`m from germany and believe me everywhere I went abroad I was confronted with things like that and got my ass kicked because of our lovely history. And right after that our government released a study that germans are the most favourited tourists in the states of the European Union. I`m tired of that

Thanks Bass B. I took a lot of other ones but the ones at sea get somewhat repetitive.
Soul - Yea, people can be pretty shifty at times. So far I've been fortunate enough to not encounter any anti-military or anti-american behavior while overseas.

The Navy looks pretty cool, were you an OCS grad or NORTC commissioned?
I didn't really look into the Navy before I signed for the Army. Well now I got a scholarship offer, but I'm sort of low on motivation already and that is not good. I don't want to go to summer camp next summer again and end up playing dumb games and be evaluated on them. There are lots of asshole cadets also who I think I would lose my cool around if forced to be near them for too long. I guess anything in the military is really more people-oriented jobs than anything obviously, not sure if its right for some quiet metal kid. I tend to do poor with the group stuff and good by myself with things like shooting and land nav, pt, etc. Maybe E-1 instead of O-1? choices are sort of driving me mad.

What do you mean E1 instead of O1?
I went through OCS. We have Officers from the Naval Academy and also NROTC...then there are the prior enlisted that are either Warrant Officers or LDO's.
No matter E or O, you're going to have to deal with people a lot, and there will always be someone or several people that are annoying as hell. The worst is that many of them will be higher in rank and you'll have to listen to them.
You should take advantage of the scholarship deal. The higher an education you can get, the more it will help you in any branch of the military, E or O.
edit..In regards to the Navy looking cool. It has it's ups and downs like every branch and every other job out there. Sometimes I love it, and a few times I've really disliked it. Overall I am happy with where I am at and plan on continuing down this road until I can retire.

LMAO, it's not as much a down grade as it seems. The roles are completely different and haven't you ever once wished you were in the ranks so you could worry about different things? I know officers have another world of problems so sometimes being enlisted might seem like a vacation... sometimes.
drawn&quartered, it might seem like enlisted get to do the super cool dangerous stuff, but its a hard path to go. If you have the chance to become an officer than I would go for it first. So long as you are not active duty I don't think its to late to transfer branches. I might be wrong but at least find out for yourself. Overall its up to what you want to do at this point. If that means enlisting than cheers. My recruit sister division had a guy with a masters degree, but he enlisted... everyone thought he was crazy but I'm sure he had his reasons. Plus, you are right about the military being all about people; the good and the bad. Without people its just a lot of expensive gear that does nothing. The ego pumping jerks get noticed eventually and suffer what comes to them. Just give it time. Sometimes you have to dig deep to humble yourself, think, and focus on the job.

Well I didn't mean it like that. I meant, if you are going to avoid working with a group..it won't matter either way really.
Yea, I've thought exactly that before. Seeing my guys not get roped up in some of the crap we get caught up in. Then again, I'm also not mustered up for every working party or crawling through the bildges wiping up oil.
There's a different set of problems for every rank. A lot of DIVOs think it will be great to be at Dept Hd and have division officers to push around..but they deal with all kinds of crap we don't have to worry about as much.
In other news, I got orders! Heading out to Yokosuka, Japan to be the Training Officer on another DDG (82). Won't be out there until August though, so hopefully things have gotten better over there by then. The area I'll be living in didn't get messed up very much at all really. Most of the real damage was much further north.

I'll let you know how it is. Probably post plenty of pics too. Cool thing is that plenty of bands make the trip out there to play shows and I'll only be an hour away from Tokyo. Haven't been to a show since I lived down in FL.

screw the military??? brother, without the military youd be speaking turbinese right now....
i tried to join the army,i knew i wasnt good enough for the marines like my brothers, but i coulnd't even get into the army! -my failure didnt hurt me tho,it made me respect the military even more because i saw how hard it is.
I respect any man (or women!) whos willing to go into iraq and protect our freedoms and risk there lives at the same time.
What is Every ones opinion about homo-sexuals in the military? do you think it was a good thing to allow them in or a bad thing? Personally i dont think it matters,i think it was a bigger mistake to let women join.I dont think women are weaker i respect them but i just dont think its right for them to be in the line of fire at all.

xxx -red necks is just as offensive to us as N-word is to colords, but you dont mind offending southerners because you consider us less than colourds, and that shows how racsist you are...
estringrev -women arent aloud in any military based around water because there titties make them to much buoyant! You cant put limpits on a sub if you have to float on top of the water!!!

And there you go with that "u" again. And there are women on subs. I've seen them graduate. And lots of southerners refer to themselves as rednecks so I don't know where you got that clueless idea from. Oh, maybe I just determined it right there. Rat cheer to y'all.

Where did you get the idea I was in love with him? My son was a submariner. And I'm from the side that won the war 150 years ago. Apparently he's still living 151 years ago. Give or take a year.

Now THAT'S good ASCII. This calls for some poetry!
Women should be pregnant every day
From their early teens until they're old and grey
and when they're tired of labor pains
we'll just wrap 'em up in chains
and dump 'em into San Francisco Bay
ba diddy boo!

ha ha chris!!!! -women should maybe stay at home with the newborn babies?? im not mysogenist,i just dont want to think about a woman being tortured or be-headed or rapped or something like that and thats what will happen if a cameljockey gets there hands on them.Im sure they can handle themselves just fine in battle but a woman has more dangers than a man if they get captured by terriorists hiding in a sand dune like animals.
plus we all know very well that a woman cant keep secrets so torture wont even be needed!!!! ha ha

Yea, I don't know what's going on in here.
Probably moving back to the states this coming summer. Still not exactly sure where, but maybe southern California.

God, I miss Paddy's trolling. He really had LB going for a while there. Can't believe that was already a year ago with that stupid shit... him and his fake accounts. Where have you gone, Paddington McBear? My boner is standing at half-chub status in honor of all those metal tabbers who have gone MIA or taken prisoner by, I don't know, country music? Beats me.

So many veterans now on MT. Perhaps start our very own international metal militia Metal Tabs for the fuck of it lol? For the sake of heavy music. I would sport a IMMMT badge at the VFW. Not like the older crew don't try driving me out by the glare and stares for not having cut my hair in 6 years as it is. I meet some guys that joined after I EAOSed, did 4 years and love calling me a tree hugging hippy based only on the length of my beard and hair... Not that there is anything wrong with being a tree hugging hippy but those dumb ass nubs never expect my verbal assault after that derogatory mislabeling mistake. My point being is not to judge someone from looks, but I do remember people being warmer to me at veteran clubs when I had a briefly short chopped hair cut. My life in CIVLANDNAVFLT has been what I've made it and I'm living my own dreams to include long hair and beard, but I also miss active duty Navy a tiny bit everyday. A very tiny bit lol.
My greatest bitch is the shitbag fucktards that claim to be military, show up to military funerals, civil functions, or parading at bars wearing a dress uniform, on top with chest candy medals they never earned and don't know how to wear in the right order. Yet when asked their name and how they got WWII medals while only being in their 20's its "black ops classified". Welcome to the greatest ass kicking ever by my hand at that point. I will not tolerate it.
Any of you ever deal with military fakes before? I got one person still on my shit list locally that claims to be a Marine. I've known him since the mid 90's and he isn't any kind of combat Marine yet claims to be one with honors. I heard him say it once when he didn't know I was near, had it posted all over his facespace I later found out, and claimed all kinds of shit at a bar once while he didn't know other real veterans were there listening. He was discharged from the Marines after 10 months for different reasons depending who you ask in 98'. I know that for certain. While I can commend the effort of giving it a go I can't let him ride on that alone. It looks as though he may have been dishonorably discharged but refuses let anyone help him get a copy of his DD214. Fact is, he is a fake and a scam artist. He has no combat in Afgan or Iraq; no medals; no nothing. He wasn't even allowed to have his uniforms when discharged in 98'. He has been a social leech, a parasite really, that passes from one person to another with a sad story to tell every time... a vet Marine just down on his luck. I've seen him pull the stunt 10 times I know of in the last 3 years on close friends of mine. I warned them but they had to try and help someone in dire need of assistance. In every case I know of he stole from each place he leaves. It super pisses me off.

Fuck remember the fake special forces captain who claimed to be in charge of the Oklahoma bridge collapse? He was obese, didn't follow regs on his uniform and it took a few days for someone to start asking questions.
The Marine who stood in front of a school after the attacks at the elementery school ended up being a chump. Stayed in for a little over a year...claimed to be an E5,had gone to Iraq , and Afganistain. None of which was true he did state he never said any of that.

This is what I get for drinking and believing I can troll around the webs, especially this green abyss, and not get caught up in things. Now I'm back at it like a crack fiend. Curse you Nomad. How much of my life will I spend here lol.
Anyways, I didn't know that about the guy at the school. Someone asked me a few months ago what I thought it about it. I understood him wanting to help people feel secure but at the same time it seemed like attention whoring. I don't believe schools need or want military types deciding to stand guard unannounced at school doors; and I'm really certain they don't want lone wolf, military wanna be, survivalist wrack jobs doing it. If a community asked for veterans, military, and police to volunteer to stand guard then there would be no shortage. A few people standing watch with the right training and radios might have a positive effect, but it would need to be properly organized. None of this lone wolf shit.
As for these other fakes, I read not long ago that some court decided that it was protected under freedom of speech to claim military service, wear a uniform and metals, despite the stolen valor act. Basically, its ok to disrespect every person that has actually earned those things.
Check these punks out. Hell, I might as well create my very own NASA space shuttle door gunner combat badge and add it to my uniform if this is the case

I'm sure it means more to you now than it did when you posted the above post. I'm seriously not being an ass. Thanks for making it your personal responsibility.

You can still cross over to the dark side down the road I imagine.
Ehh don't feel bad, I rarely ever take leave other than Xmas or pre/post deployment. At my last command, I took 1 day off and then I took 4 or 5 off to go see my brother get married.

Crossing over soon. I want to be an officer for sure. I just hate OCS is 12 weeks, can't imagine being locked away again for a long period of time.

Yea, I might go that path one day. When I get out of swc though I will only have about 2 years left on my contract. So I'll either stay on that path or GTFO of here. Plans don't like to stay together here though.
I also do get block leave in July

Cool, it definitely has it's perks. It comes with a different array of drawbacks though, it's not all golf and having dinner at the O-Club. The thing for me is that the higher you get, the more politics start creeping into it.
OCS is "fun". hah It's one of those things that sucks but when you look back on it you just have to laugh. I'd never want to go back, that is for sure.
Where at in Hawaii? I lived there a long time ago, over at Kaneohe Bay.

What's SWC? I'm over in Monterey now and had to extend my time in to get the orders I have now, so I'll be here for 18 months, Newport, RI for 6, probably Dahlgren, VA for 6 weeks or so then do two 18 month sea tours somewhere. Hopefully in Florida but it's tough to get. It's small and people tend to stay there once they get there.
Play it by ear though and have a plan if you decide to get out.

This is Army speak to me. SF as in Special Forces? If so, awesome you are applying. It's difficult to get in and difficult to maintain. The unseen side is that is it is also a bit harder to maintain a relationship, though being able to tell a girl you are Recon or whatever helps initially..it's just whether they stick around when you leave randomly for unknown amounts of time. Just something to consider. Honestly, if I was in better shape when I was younger and knew I wanted to do the military, I'd go for it.
I had no idea when I was younger and spent most of my prior to military time drinking beer and playing guitar. Not the lifestyle required for someone interested in spec ops. If you've read books about some of those guys, they all started early on and had a good idea about it (honestly because of their parents) early enough to begin training well in advance of being tested.

Yes, Special Forces. I'm actually pretty confident about selection in September. I went to the prep course in February but got hurt and was recycled. Physically I'm about as ready as I will get for it, the unit that sends candidates to selection works you out quite a bit and I have been with them longer than most. Many of my good friends I went to basic with have already passed selection a few months back and are well into training, it's not impossible to pass. There is a lot of mystique and rumours surrounding sf that are plain stupid. That being said I'm not thinking I'm in yet just because my buddies are. Overall though I have a good idea what to expect. Lots of lockdown in Camp McKall, hard training, etc. I don't even know any girls since I've left for basic anyway, there is literally no excuse for me to not suck it up and go to school.

Badass man! I wish I kept myself in better shape leading up to my decision to join. I guess drinking beer and playing guitar isn't the best training for Spec Ops. Well best of luck to you at the school! That stuff probably makes Navy OCS look like a summer camp. It was no picnic but it's nothing like BUDs or Ranger school.

You had Sarah Conner at RECON.
Seriously, best of luck at spoon and fork school guys and/or gals. I know its hard and isn't easy holding on to your soul with all those dollars dangling in the O ranks, yet keep in mind you might be able to move into complicated Officer mess but you can never come back to the simple enlisted ranks... We'z got standards to keep, ya know
Edit: Only enlisted joke like this.
Commander and Chief get a shave at a barber shop. Barber goes to put after shave on Commander and he says, "Don't put that shit on me! My wife will think I've been inside a whore house!" Chief says, "Go ahead and slather it on. My wife doesn't know what the inside of a whore house smells like"

*shakes head looking at Souli'* That was AWFUL. lol
A lady I know was in SF and got out. She's a sweetheart, but I sure wouldn't want to piss her off, let's just say.
I hope it kicks your ass and you love every minute of it.

Women are not allowed in SF yet, still a boys club. She probably was group support though working with operators, or maybe even Civil Affairs or Psyops which kind of play into sf responsibilities.

Well I finished selection, but didn't get selected. I actually cried. I can come back in six months but I think I will try my luck with ranger regiment first.

Yeah, I think my husband had to take tests a couple times to qualify in the Navy for different things, but it's worth it. Next time.

Sucks. But keep at it; you obviously care enough. Just out of curiosity, what's the specialization of the rangers? The word in itself is a direct translation of the type of service that was my first choice when I did my quick visit in the draft process.

Rangers focus on Direct Action missions, kill or capture targets. Special forces are broader in their operations, focusing on guerrilla warfare or training foreign militias.
