A Thread About Lyrical Preferences
Some bands write songs about personal pain, perseverance, and deep views about life in a sort of poetic way. Some other bands tend to write write gory lyrics and songs about simple things usually having to do with violence or horror topics. Then, some bands tend to take the politcal route. I know there are many more lyrical topics that bands use than these, but between these three which do you enjoy most?
(here's my opinion. skip the rest if you don't give a shit...)
In my opinion, I get a little bit of a bitter feeling when I hear songs that have alot to do with personal troubles (especially the shit about relationships) and all the deeper views of life. It's not that I can't understand it -- I used to write poetry (although quite dark). But I usually prefer a simple side to my metal; topics that have almost no emotional attachment. If they do have too much emotion and that kind of life-struggle sense to them, they seem too much like teen angst shit. Political lyrics usually are a little more "grown-upy angst", but hell, that can be just as cheesy and annoyingly bitchy about the world. So I usually go for the more simplistic, dark, twisted, and horror-themed stuff. How about you guys?
(yeah, it's a dumb thread. but i figured you guys might be as bored as i am.)

Gore isn't my thing, I prefer raw emotion but not angsty shit. Romantic emotion, Evergrey style. My Dying Bride and other doom metal sort of angst, not the "my fat girlfriend dumped me in 1983" type angst. Some non-specific political lyrics like KMFDM that also adress how politics affect personal emotions of people are good, like "Last Things". Religion themed lyrics sometimes, like how religion affects people, especially Morbid Angel.Anyway, anything to do with people's emotional destruction, love (most often painful, one sided love), darkness, and strangely enough, machines of all sorts and sizes.

Right out brutal "I will fucking kill you!" shit gets me going a bit or Cannibal Corpse lyrics such as the ones on "The Wretched Spawn" cd. Mad, gory, destruction, hate! I love it!

I like lyrics that convey a sense of ultimate power.
I especially like Morbid Angel's 'Day of Suffering' when he says stuff like, "lord of light i swarm against you now...". The sense of power eminates through that at an intense level.

Lyrics don't matter to me too much, but I do like it when a band strays from the usual 'gore-style' lyrics. I like shit that makes you think, eg.
Phlegton (Wormed) - All sorts of interesting physics/space related stuff.
Lord Worm (Cryptopsy) - Usually gore orientated, but the style is very unique. He uses prose incredibly well, maybe because he's an English Teacher.
But................ I do love a bit of over-the-top gore every now and then.

I like all sorts of lyrics although the more historic, romantic or thoughtful ones are usually my favorites. Opeth has had some good ones. And I was bored and started reading some by Death, since I like the music generally but can't understand a lot of the words, and I was pleasantly surprised at the philosophical thoughtfulness in some of them. I don't really get into gore unless it hits my funnybone somehow like that "Chainsaw Buttsecks" thing that got posted. That was just wrong!
