Live they use ENGL powerballs and a Marshall JCM 2000
In the studio John uses his custom made amp that cost more than you can afford.

Line 6 amps are not bad dude. I've used to got a Line 6 spider 212 and it sounded good. It had a lot of gain on it. and the clean was also very clear. Plus it had built in effect wich sounded fine too

Powerballs arent really that expensive new. Pricewise, they are just a little bit more than the JCM 2000's price new. So they are definately affordable if you are serious about your music.
But for Iced Earth's tone. Just about anything with a tight attack and decent gain should do ya. Afterall, you don't have to sound EXACTLY like him do you?

well, nobody said they were bad did they?
but a strat into a line 6 pod xt live is not the way to go for iced earth style tone...
personally i like some line 6 stuff(hd147,vetta II, old modpro/echopro, ect..) and hate most of them though. spiders especially are garbage.
strats are cool, i like some, but you need to realise they arent exactly metal guitars... sure they can do metal... but not the same way a jackson soloist or ibanez rg will.

ok now we're getting somewhere.... what pickups? specs?
how much are you willing to spend on an amp? because that will determine the results greatly.
what is your current head and cab or combo situation?
