Guitar Amp for Bass?

Does plugging in a Bass guitar into a guitar amp a good idea?

Will the bass damage the amp in any way?
Does the amp make a difference if it's tube, solid state, combo?
Speaker size? Does volume affect anything?

I got a buddy coming to town and he
can only fit his bass guitar for the trip. I'd like to plug in and jam with him
but I don't own any bass amps.

I do have an analog recorder. I could plug the bass directly into the
recorder and play it through my ghetto speakers but I'm sure it'll sound
terrible.

Any suggestions?

It won't sound good, and could dammage your amp.

Didn't the guy in Napalm Death play his bass through a Marshal guitar amp with distortion on?

I'm pretty sure that was a 70's-80's JCM 800 Super Bass head. Lemmy from motorhead uses these too.
