How much distortion?
I use about half way up on my boss mt-1 mt-2 and md-2. I like a good clean Sargeist type tone, not too much mid either.

My Rockmaster was made in the late 80's/ early 90's so It doesnt have much gain, I have it at 7 with the boost on. Gives a kinda Slayerish sound.

"Well as you can see here the knobs go up to 11, just incase you dont think 10 is enough, theres always that 1 more you can put into it if you really need it"

For guitars, more distortion helps palm muting sound better. But everyone knows that too much distortion can be a blurry mess. Personally, I play a 4-string Peavey bass (tuned down one step to DGCF). And what I do is run it through a Digitech RP200 so that it can sound like a really low guitar instead of a bass. It works because in my band, it's just me on vocals/bass guitar and then the drums. I don't need a guitarist because it works like a guitar AND a bass. Trust me -- it sounds pretty fucking heavy! I use the preset called "Scoop" on the RP200, which I think is a marshall amp setting with 89 (out of 100) on the distortion.

My distortion level is 6 on my mesa boogie dual rectifier.
And when I use the randall ultra high gain pre-amp. Than I have the gain at 8.

Pre-gain at 8.5 on my 5150 II. Resonance and presence knobs on ten. I'm getting my Shecter newly installed with EMG's from the shop tomorrow, so I imagine my settings will change a bit.

I use shitloads when I palm mute, but otherwise not too much gain. Somehow, less is more, as in it actualy gets heavier
