Seymour Duncan pickups
I am going to buy a pair of Seymour Duncan pickups. I was looking at either Invader or Dimebucker pickups, and was wondering if either one is better than the other for a chunky metal sound? Any advise is greatly appreciated

the dimebucker is yet another dime signature gear flop...
the invader is much better, higher output, thicker, less muddy, much more clarity, ect..
but if you're looking for a good high output passive pickup i say look at the dimarzio x2n.

the invader was a big letdown for me. even the tom de-schlong strat has one, lol.
its not as powerfull like it looks. I'de rather get a tb-6 or something.
the dimbucker, I tried it in a friend's Dean and it wasn't bad. it kinda depends on what kinda guitar you use it in, as in most pickups, but it's not 'thick' sounding, if you as me.
don't rule out the dimarzio tone zone's, the sd jazz/jb setup and emg's!

I'm also looking for inexpensive without sacrifising tone. I've also heard about Seymour Duncan Detonators, any opinion on those?

Yes, I too have heard that the Dimebucker had tons of feedback and hiss to it. Just get Dimarzios and shut the fuck up.

I'm currently using an Invader. Pretty good for some crunchy riffs. Yeah, a bit muddy at times, but just turn the treble down the amp..! I bet I'd be happier with a JB though. oh, and detonators suck. fake invaders... they sound like shit.

well, the xzn is the highest output one they have...
but the tonezone is probably my favorite for the bridge position... more of an alround pickup though, it's got a good medium/high output, but i picked it for clarity and the cool tonal characteristics.... my amp has more than enough gain anyways... to me high output pickups are for kicking amps in the ass a little to make them a tad more brutal, dudes like slayer and zakk wylde using high output pickups like emg's and boost pedals to hit their jcm 800's a bit harder.
but 3B on my triamp has tons of gain on tap and my main style is a little more post hardcore/metalcore with a little grind and metal influences. so i don't need super buzzsaw dying fetus style distortion(but i can acheive it )...
but some guys insist on throwing as much gain as they possibly can out of their rig. and if you're one of them, an x2n will certainly fit the bill.

I can personally attest to the horrible quality of the Dimebucker :
I once had an Epiphone SG G-400, which I was modding heavily. When choosing a bridge humbucker, I was looking for the nastiest bridge humbucker money could buy. I decided that a product with Dimebag's name on it could'nt be anything but, at the very least, satisfactory.
There was about a 1% difference in sound from the stock Epiphone pickup and the Dimebucker. The Dimebucker was slightly, more shrill. And that was it.
When you can buy a Bill Lawrence XL-500, for roughly half the price of a Dimebucker, I see absolutely no point in a Dimebucker.

so would it be possible to have a xzn at the neck and a tonezone at the bridge? Or would it just be better to go with two of either?
EDIT
oh yeah, as I was looking at the tone zone, it gave me the option of F space or regular, what the hell does that mean?

if I go with either the Tone Zone or the X2N, what would be a good neck pickup?

I just got an X2N in my Schecter Omen-6 (shut up, it's a damn good guitar if you change pickups...)
Havent got a chance to play it yet, i gave it to a friend to give to a local shop to replace the stock pu, but apparently this exchange occured:
Friend: So, how is it?
Shop Owner: Loud
Needless to say i cant wait til i get my baby back.

F spaced means its been spaced for use with a floyd equipped guitar

Just got my X2N equipped Schecter back today.
POWERFUL PICKUP!!!
get this: I put the gain on 0 (ZERO!!!!!!!!!) on the high-gain channel of my Randall RH100 and it still sounded crushing.
then i tried that on the "vintage distortion" channel, and it still sounded metal as all fuck.
It also, oddly enough, made my other stock neck pu sound better...

That is odd.
I'm interested to see what my EMG's are going to do to my 5150 II ( receiving my gutiar from the tech today ), as opposed to Seymour Duncan JB/Jazz.

speaking of such, how easy is it to change pickups yourself? I'm totally inexperienced, so should I definitely take it into the shop or is it pretty self-explanitory?

Dimebuckers are great!!!
I've just installed a Dimebucker on my Ibanez EX 370 and man does it kill. This is my first "pro" pick up ever. I've never had a guitar with good or decent pickups. They've all been stock. I've got a great Suffocation tone going and I can get a wide range of other tones with it, from Black Sabbath to Cob. I know that this is my first good pick-up but I've installed and played with plenty others. My friend is in pure awe and he has a set of EMG 81's.

I received my Schecter C-1 Classic, newly equipped with an EMG 81/85 set. to replace a Jb/Jazz set. I'm certainly satisfied with the results.
