Slapping the bass

I know this is a bit of a stupid question but how do you actually slap the bass

ive seen fieldy from korn, slap it with his whole hand, fingers and just a full on slap
like you would someone in the face, and some people say its with your thumb and a kind of wrist action im really confused at the moment so if any really good bass slappers out there tell me that would be kool, cheers!

Iīm no good slapper, but I do it by hitting the string with the thumb parallel to it at the end of the fretboard. (a bit difficult to describe with my bad english)

Cheers

yeah try to slap as close to the fretboard as you can, it sounds better, there are many ways to slap, like the stu hamm style etc.. bended arm, straight arm, some guys even slap near the bridge, but that sucks.

You don't need to make 2 threads about the same thing in the same forum.

Pop and slap!

i have had my bass for about 5 months now, and i am looking through techniques for using it, i have just learned how to pop and how to slap, and have created a solo using both of them with hammer-ons pull-offs and slides, does anyone know any good metal bands that have bassists that use that in their music?

c'mon where is everyone in the bass zone?!

Cheers

WHEN John Myung plays solo, he does it damn good!!! But i donīt think he slaps/pops often.
Other good bassists are Les Claypool of Primus/Fearless Flying Frog Parade/ Oysterhead/ Sausage. He plays like hell and he does everything: slapping, popping, fast finger style, chords...
Another one is Victor Wooten, he is THE slapper!!!
I donīt think you will find many metal bands where the bassists create awesome solos you can listen to. Theyīre often just awesome "bass-riffe", who are hard enough.
Try to listen to many other bands, which have great bassists. Try to find your own style with influences of them and then create a metal-like solo.

Check out the bassists of suicidal tendencies
Even if I 'm not a big fan I must admit that they rule in slap

And defenitly go find out about Jean-Jacques Moreac
the bassist of Misanthrope
absolutly awesome in every style

Doesnīt the bassist of Suicidal Tendencies also play in "Infectious Grooves"? Itīs the funky version of Suicidal Tendencies.

Another good one is John Paul Jones. He was in Led Zeppelin, i think. His solo-albums are very atmospherical.

Slapping is a method of slapping & popping. Slap with your thumb and pull the lower strings with your fingers. You slap the upper strings (really just the top one) and and make a popping sound with the lower strings by putting your (fingers) under them and pulling hard. It's a distinct sound. Try it.

And why I put "fingers" in parenthesis, is unknown to me!

Slapping the upper /lower strings eeehmm e.g. the d-string and the g-string nakes a good sound as well. But itīs hard to do. Hitting the right string in a fast song and then in the right spot.

slap is about timin, keep ya wrist at ease and hit the side of your thumb against the string as close to the end of the fretboard as possible (still hitting the fretboard) use your wrist like you would with a bongo or percussion instrument, quick attacks, to get that definate sound, your thumb acts like an alastic it should bounce of the string when perfected, the pop technique is produced by your index finger which is called an upward attack, meaning you lift the string and it slaps down on the fretboard , start off keeping a 4/4 beat , the slap pop technique sounds excellent when played in octaves and this is widely used by all bassists who practice this technique, in a 4/4 beat start of with your thumb than alternate to your index finger and continue alternating these are the basics to the slap pop technique
