emg 89

Ok, here we go
Well i was planning to get an emg-85 neck pickup to acompany my emg-81 bridge pickup. it seemed like the perfect combination but then...i came across the emg-89.

the emg website says thats its pretty much an emg-85 with a coil tap option.
if that is the case, then this is the most ideal pickup combination for me... (emg-81 & emg-89).

but i just wanted to make sure of a few things before i did buy it:

1.) Has anyone tried the emg-89 and if so, what did they think of it?
2.) When in humbucker mode, does it really like the emg-85?
3.) The emg-89 comes with special vol and tone pots, will i be able to use that to control the emg-81 pickup aswell? so basicly i want both pickups to be controlled by the 1 volume pot and 1 tone pot.

thats all i want to know for the moment

i would be extremely grateful if you could help me out with this

cheers

I think you should be able to have it with a 81. No problem. From what I know the 89 is a 85 hum that can be switched via coil tap into a single. Should sound just like a 85 unless is is in sigle mode but I have never tried it.

I have heard/read somewhere that the 89 is really an 85 and an SA. 2 pups in one, you just switch between them. I DON'T KNOW if this correct or not, but I have heard/read it. If this is the case, it'll sound like an 85 when in hb-mode, cause it is. The rest of your questions I can't help answer though.

i have a 89 in bridge position on a ESP V and an 81 in my other V.
1 its definately awesome, low end sounds dark, tight and punchy, i think its ideal for DM or any other musik where a heavy rhythm tone is desired.

2 the 89 sounds very similar to the 85 but not exakt, as its also got the coil tap affekting the tone slightly, but youd never notice unless listening out for it.

3 you kan kontrol both pus with the same volume pot and tone pot.

Stop replacing Cs with Ks. It's annoying and stupid.
