why marshall? im not saying their bad (i have a tsl works wonderfull) but you shouldnt just say you want a marshall and only a marshall try out other amps aswell. i ended with my marshall cause it was the best out of the ones i tried but thats personal preference and i didnt get to try all the heads i would have liked too. but the jcm 2000 tsl 100 is a killer head IMO, nile uses the dsl 100 and they have an awsome tone and imo the tsl blows the dsl away

Marshall's weren't made for Death metal, and I'm surprised Nile gets the sound they get outta them. Marshalls are kick ass, but when I tried them out, I couldnt really get a good death metal sound. Guess you really gotta crank them.

which ever the 2000 one is.
and various other ones of which I dont remember. but I have tried the M4. Apparently the shockwave (which I own) is Crates answer to that.. I'd say the shockwave definitely won.

a lot of guys who use jcm 800's have the gain circuit modded. they also swap out the tubes. i have 2 marshall valvestate 100 heads. i actually prefer them to any of the other marshalls, including the 800 and t/dsl's. but the best amp i've ever used is a mesa rectifier. single, dual, triple. doesn't matter. they're great. the peavey xxx and 5150 are also good. it's cool if you want a marshall but if you're buying it for its name you should really think twice. there's better amps to be had.

Eh? Me? I've been around. Not posting much though. Last few days I've been involved in a little bit of debating in the chitchat.
And in case you weren't talking to me, just forget this.

The JCM 800 is more of a clean sounding ac/dc type amp sound with it just being stock. Some people modify their JCM 800 head to get more distortion out of it or they just use a distortion pedal.
The thing with tube amps is they all sound a little different even when you buy the same model that someone else has. And that being said it depends on what you are running through them too ( guitar,Pickups etc.)
The best sound that I have gotten from a JCM 800 for DEATH METAL is a line 6 uber metal pedal with the insane drive or a metal zone. Or maybe even a line 6 pod. An EQ or even a sonic maximizer in the effects loop will always make things sound better.
The best amp I have played on for death metal to me so far
Just pluggin straight in to it for the distortion is a AMPEG 140ch head.
Its not tube but to me with a sonic maximizer in the effects loop it sounds awesome!!!!!! I never liked tube distortion. I like the power that they can push out and would use one for the power and run a pedal into it.

I personally wouldn't buy a marshall for death metal. I stick with the mesa boogie rectifier....They produce some serieus distortion

Hmm I think if the tunning is lower it also adds to the sound. But for my Marshal I usually take out all the Mids and put the Bass and Treble full up.
It gives a good crunchy sound.
I really want to get a Pevey 5150. I think it would make good death metal/grindcore amps.

why take out all the mids? I know some marshalls are fairly mid voiced but to cut them completely is kind of silly. Your leads must sound shit

I only do it for death metal/grindcore type stuff plus I usually use a wah with my solos to give them more of an ooomfff. But I put the mids half way when I do some old school thrash stuff.

I like to cut the mids on my amplifier EQ ( 5150 II --- mids at 1, bass at ten, Treble at 6-7 ) and use my EQ pedal to give me just enough mid to cut through the mix when I'm playing with others. This amplifier articulates this sound particularly well.
Don't worry about being associated with the Line 6 users who play Trapt and scoop the mids by scooping your own ... if you can play then you won't have that problem.

I play all sorts of metal and my current set up is this ...
Jackson Kelly w/ EMG 81/85
Earnie Ball strings (the ones w/the thicker lower strings)
Tuned 2.5 steps down
Marshall TSL 60 w/the cheap cab (had to cut some corner) from the MG series.
First off, tube amps are meant to be played loud. You can get cool old school death sound by dropping the presence and treble to around 5 - 6 and keep the bass full and the mids around 3 -4. Increasing the treble and presense makes it sound sharper. Usually as the volume goes up, bring the presense back a little. I can get the sounds I want from Metallica, to Nile to Bolt Thrower.

Any amp with enough gain can be used for death metal. It just depends on what sound you want. Listen to albums, find the tones you like the most, find out what they used to make those sounds, buy that stuff. And always remember that even a great amp is going to sound like ass through crap speakers. So if you are on a budget, I would say, get a cheap used 4x12 for around $150 or so, ditch the speakers, get some warehouse speakers, and buy a decent cheap amp.
