These days with DNA, we'd have found out anyway.
I don't buy snakes, but I sure do manage to keep a whole lot of them. I occasionally think about buying some more uncommon types I see at the reptile store where I pick up my feeders- I saw an Arizona elegans the other day that I really liked. He's also had in a Rhinocheilus lecontei, as well as an Aspidites ramsayi and Boa dumerili, all three of which are very uncommonly seen in stores in the US. He always has in excellent stuff, if there were anyone from the area, I'd recommend Coldblooded Pets in a heartbeat. The only person from around here is low-tech, and he lives in Providence, and they have a place out there just as nice- Regal Reptiles.
As of my snakes right now, I happen to have one kingsnake- a wild caught yearling Lampropeltis triangulum triangulum (Eastern Milksnake) that's currently growing accustomed to captivity. I've finally got him eating and I'll probably release him next summer or spring.
I also have 3 adult Python regius, as well as 2 babies sired by the adults. All are eating well and in good health. The adults were all rescued animals. I've had my oldest female since fall of 2002, my younger female since April of 2003, and my oldest male since May of 2004.
If I upload any pics of the milksnake, I'll show them off- it's a pretty animal and it looks nice in the pictures I took when we caught her.

Nahhhh mine is really calm and cool. Always has been. Probably since we got him when he was about the size of a pencil and I handled him a lot, especially as a baby little snakey.

I had that on tape when I was 14, but my mom threw it away. She threw away all my fucking tapes. She bought me my first guitar to make up for it, though.
The only things I've bought recently are some wrestling DVDs and I have to get feeders for my snakes every week. Other than that, just mundane, everyday stuff like blank video tapes, cds, DVDs, household supplies, animal care supplies, etc.

what kind of "earth"? just soil you found? it might not be a bad idea to put the spider in before its completely dry. that way it can dig around and make a hide and the burrow will hold a little better then dry and stay like that..or at least somewhat.

no it was a soil brick i bought at the reptile store, had to add some water to it and then it expanded to two litres of soil. Anyways, i've put the spider in the tank together with some dry soil of the box where it came in. He seems comfortable, sitting against the glass.
best pet i've ever had
oh and what's your policy on handling those babies? I dont really have the guts to pick it up yet, to be honest

ahh i love that brick stuff...but its no fun making it. i let it expand then squeeze out all the water i can handful at a time. kinda tedious. then just put it in a large plastic tub and spread it out up against the sides for the most surface area and put it under a light that puts out some heat. then just stir it up every now and then to make sure its all getting dried out.
as for handling them...i rarely do it and it took me some time to feel comfortable with it. its a much debated part of the hobby. personally i think its a good thing to get used to.
the worst thing that can happen is either you get bit...and if its small it shouldn't really be that bad, you get the urticating hairs in your skin, or worse than any of these...you jump because of a sudden movement the spider makes and the spider gets flung across the room. this could easily result in a dead spider, or if it survives, it could get loose in your house.
once you get more comfortable with them, you will be less jumpy. that is why i think its good to try it out some. if you get more into it and start getting more "advanced" species...you might one day wind up with a spider on you that you didn't intend to pick up. occasionally people are doing routine maintenance...filling up water dish or cleaning out food remains, and the spider sprints right up your arm and stops wherever...your head, under your shirt, some have had them go into their pants!
each species has a general attitude that you can find out by looking around for care sheets or other info, but each one..like us..has its own personality. sometimes a spider of one the less friendly species could be the most docile possible. so its always good to learn what the individual is like and how it reacts to things like a gentle prod in the abdomen with a soft brush or something.
the trick is to not do anything they might perceive as a threat. their thought process is basically "is this food? is it going to make food out of me? eat it? defend myself? run and hide?" so be calm and steady. the first times i picked one up, i basically just opened the lid and let the spider make its way to the top so that its about to exit the enclosure. i just put my hand where the next steps it would've taken would be and thats about it.
hah well sorry for the novel. theres a lot of good info out there online though... www.arachnoboards.com is the main forum i use for this stuff. there is a british tarantula society (BTS) website...they are the world's most popular organization about tarantulas and theres lots of good info there from some really smart fuckers. from what i can tell, the hobby is quite a bit more advanced over in europe than here in the states..though we are gaining on you guys. edit...and i think you have better prices and often get species before us!

you could try that...thats how some people get them onto their hands..but first i would test its reaction without putting your hand there. sometimes they will just do a quick 180 and possibly strike. (which is what the soft brush is for heh) if it raises its front set or two of legs into the air and holds its position, don't try to pick it up. thats their way of saying leave me alone.

you are right, they are a terrestrial species and will likely make some kind of burrow/hide. http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/IMG_0653s.jpg
thats mine after it molted the last time i think. another good idea is to start a burrow for them to try and dictate where they make their hide. that way you can get it along the side of the enclosure so you can see inside. a good thing to do if the hide is along the side is to block the light by taping some construction paper or something just on the top so it has a hinge. sometimes they will web up the side of the tank to block light if you don't since they are nocturnal and don't like light. with the paper, you will always be able to flip it up and look in if you haven't seen it in some time.
also with feeding...they aren't like other pets. i feed all of mine usually once a week. just one cricket. sometimes more often, sometimes less. the smaller they are, the easier it is to have them die. so i would feed the smaller ones 2 or 3 times a week at most until they get some size and are well established.
edit..have you seen them as full grown adults? they kick ass. a good site to find pics of almost every species is www.birdspiders.com theres a really good article on sexing them on that site as well...its the one i recommend to anyone with questions about it.

thanks for your help, appreciate it.
one more problem though; when the tank is closed for a couple of hours, the glass gets soaked, big drops of water you know. It's also very moisy, about 75%. is this due to the still wet soil damping? is it harmfull to the spider?

no problem...ask whatever you need to. i asked a shitload of questions when i started getting into keeping spiders.
sounds like the substrate is still pretty wet and there isn't enough ventilation for that much moisture. it can be bad. if the food remains (usually look like a little ball of dirt almost) are left in there, parasitic mites will wind up in the enclosure since they are attracted to the remains and moisture. also, food remains and that much moisture could result in mold.
honestly, you can keep this spider on bone dry substrate...well you can keep almost all of them this way. but some moisture could help hold a burrow structure until it dries.
many times the humidity levels listed on websites are higher than needed, and a pain to maintain. as long as the spider has access to water, either a dish (for small ones i just use water bottle caps) or water from its prey, then it should be fine. sometimes i even spray a little bit of water on the side of the enclosure or just in one corner and the spider will drink from that.

Well, I WAS going to buy Guitar Pro, but jesus christ. I thought the price was like in the 20's at most. $59.00? I'd prefer buying the actual product than a pirated copy or whatever, but I'm still recovering from my last big purchase (almost a grand for recording equipment).
Think I should buy it, guys? I've been playing with the demo version, and it seems to be a more effective tabbing program than Power Tab. But do you think 59 dollars is worth it?

Last time I tried that, it didn't work, though. That's why I'm reluctant to get it.
Perhaps the one I downloaded was the MAC version or something. It never said what it was for, but that could be why it didn't work on my computer.

hmm well does it look like its drying out any? or still looks about the same? if it doesn't appear to be drying, and theres all that condensation, i would remove the spider and let it dry out a bit first. moist/damp is fine, but it sounds like its a bit more than that. that much moisture MAY not be bad, but it can't do any good.
also, they usually take a few days to adjust..so it might not do much of anything for a bit. is there anything in there it can use as a hide? in most of mine i have a piece of cork bark or other small chunk of wood. it gives them something to hide under, or attach webbing to...though the vagans would most likely just hide...they aren't big on webbing.

he's kinda laidback indeed for a couple of days. He's got a nice hiding place, i have this fake, concrete log from an old turtle aquarium in it and some fake bushes, he hides behind those (i put some foil against the glass there to keep it dark).
I've put a timeswitch on the heatcontrol so that it'll be cooler at night, i wont be able to check up on it till sunday, but i guess the condensation will be less without the constant heat.

those are good temps. if you are gonna use the heat pad, put it on one side of the tank..not under on end. it is in their instinct to burrow to escape from heat..so they could burrow down onto the pad and dry themselves out. having it at one end rather than somewhere in the middle is good too because it provides a heat gradient in the enclosure and the spider can choose just how warm it wants to be.

hahah interspecies erotica titty fuck! thats my sort of roommate, and her snake. i'm sure the snake loved it in there...nice dark, warm, big boobs.. the whole nine yards. thats one of the girls in the pic or pics of me passed out and the two girls are pretending to take advantage of me and my sausage.
you know the whole deal with molting and them lying on their backs? a lot of people freak out when they stop eating or doing much..you can often notice they are a darker color as well...then they flip over onto their "back" and shed their skin..thats how they grow since their exoskeleton's outer layer is dead. its very stressful for them since they have a whole new skin and even shed the linings of some organs. let them harden up ..either the better part of a week or if you can see the fangs and they are black again. once that has happened, you can feed them again and they'll probably be hungry. they lose a lot of moisture doing that and you can see their abdomen is smaller.

funny thing about that last one is that i used to have them laying on top of this enclosure on my desk with the computer but not in that plastic tub and some people would freak out thinking there were loose tarantulas in my room. haha

haha, those skins look insane. How many spiders worked on that stack?
i havnt asked the shopkeeper when it molted for the last time, but the spider doesnt looks puffed or dark at all and he eats well, so i suppose it wont be happening soon. I just hoped it survived being alone for a week

somewhere around 10 i guess..ones a scorpion too. i didn't start collecting them for a while and sometimes they get all torn up..by the spider. once yours puts on some size you can use these shed skins to determine the sex of the spider. theres a way to do it by looking at the underside of them at any time..but its not as fool proof. but as far as sexing it by looking at a molt goes...once its about 2.5-3" or so, you should be able to do it with the naked eye...before that you can use a magnifying lens, or camera if it has a good macro function.
i mailed one that was about 2" to someone on this other forum and they took these microscope pics that show the spider being female. http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c...rs/DSCF0012.jpg
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c...rs/DSCF0007.jpg
the thing about the females is that they live a LOT longer than the males. once males mature they usually have about a year and a half to three years to live. the females will live about 20 years..more for some, less for others. thats why a guaranteed female will cost more.

i went out for four days and when i returned the tank was completely soaked. Strangly enough the soil felt dryer, so i guess its just a matter of time. I noticed the spider tried to dig a hole but the layer of soil was only half an inch, so i made a little hill and i hope he starts digging in there.
I also took out some furnishing (the tank was too full) and the spider seems happy. He's very very active now (11.30 pm). walking around a lot and it had a cricket for lunch. I took some shots with the webcam of my new laptop, but its not connected to the internet. I also took some shots with my phone, so some opinions on the spider and the tank would be welcome (pics lack in quality)

heh ok...before i was picturing water all over the sides of the enclosure and the lid. the only thing i would say is that you definitely need more substrate. this species will often dig a nice burrow..but it needs at least 5" or so of substrate to work with on average.
generally, a widely accepted rule of thumb is that there isn't much, if any vertical space from substrate to lid beyond the length of the spiders leg span. personally i don't follow this too strictly, but its not a bad idea. reason being, if the spider is up on the glass or upside down on the lid and falls, it could rupture its abdomen(the softest part of their body). this doesn't necessarily mean its a goner, but you will have to take serious action or it will die. i've never had to do it, but basically people use super glue (weird as it sounds) to cover over the hole. i am not sure..but this may only work with small holes and not the whole insides of the abdomen out of the abdomen.
with the arboreals its no problem. they love climbing and i give them plenty of space. with something about the same amount of substrate as you have. but for the terrestrials, i always add more.
other than that, the tank is a bit big..but thats no problem. it will grow into it. the basic thing about enclosures that are too big is that they sometimes have trouble finding prey items..but i don't think it will be an issue. besides, i usually fling the crickets right next to them anyway.
what is the ventilation like? i could only really see a strip of air holes on the top center of the lid. if you are still on, i'm sitting in the chat room if you want to go in there.

another thing i noticed is that spider looks large enough to sex...though there wasn't much in any of the photos for me to get a good reference of size.

the strip on top is the only ventiliation (i bought the tank, didnt make it myself). Sometimes i take the lid off for extra ventilation (because the strip just cant handle it). At night its no problemo because the heating goes off.
Other than that, tonight i dug itself a nice hole in the hill i made, it's pretty hard to see, but it seems 2 inches deep. Considering the size of the spider, this seems reasonable. But as it grows i guess i'll have to add some substrate indeed.
It's very active and eats well, so nothing to suspect any problems. About the sexing; the spider is about 3 " span, i dunno if its time yet

ehh that sounds fine then...they basically just need a hiding spot to feel secure, its just nice to have plenty for them to dig. the hill thing is a good idea, and it looks nice..unless the spider messes it all up the vagans i have is funny..yet annoying hah. everytime i fill up its water dish, it pretty much waits for me to leave then dumps it out and many times piles substrate on top of if.
as for sexing...3" is a good size..you could look at the underside (ventral) to try and guess but its much better and easier to just wait for it to molt. not sure if i posted the link earlier but a good, not too long, read on sexing is here: http://birdspiders.com/faq_sex.html

defcon 1 and 2
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c...r/IMG_6537s.jpg
2 is really good and has some decent heat..but 1 has pepper extract as one of the ingredients! basically they extracted the part that makes it hot and i just tasted some on my finger..it is hot!
i like the flavor of 2 better, but they are both really good. i can't imagine out hot 0 is haha. they make a 3 that is their weakest sauce heat wise..but i didn't feel like sinking to that level.
