Am I On Crack? .. Weird ringing sound on higher frets of the lower strings.

Okay, I've asked a few people on AIM if they experience this with their guitar and none of them seem to know what the hell I'm talking about..

When you play.. lets say the 24th fret (or the highest fret you have) on the 6th string (or lowest string..), do you hear a slight "ringing" sound?
Its really kinda hard to explain how this "ringing" sound sounds. Its kinda like a higher pitched ringed out sound going along with the actual note of the guitar.
Anyone have the slightest clue what I'm talking about?
Because.. I've experienced this on $100 guitars and a $2000 USA Jackson guitar I played.
Basically, I want to know if anyone else has experienced this or knows what I'm talking about. Or even better yet! Knows what causes this.

Any input is appreciated. Thanks

could be flat frets or maybe bowing of the neck. if the frets are worn or dressed poorly there could be an overtone. if the neck is bowed it could cause the string to ever so slightly graze a higher fret causing a harmonic. usually when that happens these are the 2 most common culprits.

Fucking crackhedz.

Yo, maybe it's the string on the other side of the fret. Try tying a piece of cloth around the strings to keep them from ringing and see if it goes away.

Or maybe I'm on crack...

I get that too dude, i dunno what it is really. But yea sounds like a light harmonic to me. I was having problems on one of my frets and i filed it down a little and it helped. Sometimes the string doesnt contact with the fret properly.

well your bridge might be to low. and if you have new strings they tend to buzz alot at first also.

Yes, you have taken too much crack. Take less before you next pick up a guitar.

On a more serious note, if you have a 6 string guitar tuned down to be you are going to get buzz. If the guitar is not dwontunde, my thoughts would be that when you are holding the string down it is slightly touching one of the metal bits on the fretboard, causing the buzz.

I think its the frets.

That sounds like a good theory

But yeah.. The main reason I wonder this is because I believe this "ringing" sound is causing a weird bassy drown-out of the 7-12 frets on the 6th string of my guitar. Its fuckin weird.. You play that trouble area, and you can hardly here the actual note, its just drowned out by a weird bassy overtone type thing. And I have played some RG and it seemed to have this problem too..

.. and its not fret buzz, I guarantee you.

anyways, thanks for the help. Any more is extremely welcome!

Turn off your amp, then the buzzing will go away!

Does the harmonic on your 24th fret sound different than when you fret the note?

If not, you can rule out the neck...

Is it the same will both pickups? I think my guitar does the same thing you're talking about when both pickups are on.

try raising ur strings up a bitmaybe there just hitting the next fret by a little bit and becuz there hitting the next fret theyu ring a bit

i had this on my old jackson warrior

u could let a store (or whatever) redo the frets (no like putting new frets into it but like doing sumtin with it like flattening em) i dont know the english term for it

anyway im pretty sure its that.

i hope u see what i mean and if not ask sumone that english and knows the correct terms

EDIT: im kinda drunk| (again ) so it might not make any sence sry if thats the case

Its probably obvious now, but its most likely your frets. Just stop playing the 24th fret and you'll be fine.

Take it to a shop, ass.

Yes I did, but my luthier advised me not to put much in there (because it will cause the springs to get caught on it, making it not stay in pitch when I use the whammy bar).. so theres not very much in there. More may help..

the ringing is almost definately a harmonic.
every time you play a note, it has loads of harmonics, meaning, what you hear isn't just a single wave, its lots of them. the quieter ones are usually drowned out by the loudest wave, but the quiet notes alter the sound to make it richer, thinner, etc.

the volume of these harmonics is decided by many things, and probably your hearing is very good.

It's likely to be the springs, what i did was stick a bit of cloth that I cut up and this stops the buzzing, or vibration but it hasent got caught at all.

I will take a pic to show you what I did, sometimes after retuning or restringing I would get an echo like buzz and vibration on the G string.

Ozz
