Dude, you're just real choppy right now and your timing is way off. Play some of that cover material along with the album again and again and again and worry more about staying in the rhythm of the song than getting the notes right or fretted well. Sounding sloppy is fine as long as you've got rhythm, timing, and style. Just look at Hendrix and Page...
Fretting and articulating perfectly will just naturally evolve after you get your groove on. I've been playing certain difficult Malmsteen song parts on and off for ten years and I still don't sound as clean as he does, but I'm always in time with the song so it comes off well and totally blows most people away when they hear it. Feel the music, see the music, be the music...
Edit: When you absolutely can't play one part of the song as fast as the original, then slow the whole thing down equally and gradually speed it up as you get better at it.
Do me a favor and check out my stuff at the link in my signature. You would be the first one on the forum to critique it. I recorded all of it six months ago and the solos are improvised.
