Looking for information for absolute newbie

Heya fellow rockers. I've been playing guitar for years on my own, but recently me, and a bunch of my buddies decided to get into a band, and see what we can do. However we are short a drumer. So I figured I would learn the drums.

What I'm looking for is some kind of resource that I can see what things are called, what to look for. The names of the pieces and what not, Just basicly a bunch of complete newbie guides to the drums. Something that tells me what everything is called, some ideas on what type of skins and cymbols for metal music. People have said the sound we kinda got is a way heavier No Doubt.

Thanks people.

Anybody who calls me a rocker and mentions No Doubt needs to be tied down and made to listen to Immortal.

Look at my signature.

Look at this link: http://home.earthlink.net/~prof.sound/

Drum kit pieces:
The bottom drum on the floor is called the bass or kick drum. It's hit with a beater which is controlled by a pedal on the floor.

The three (or two, or more than three, depending on your kit) other plain looking drums are called toms. The biggest is the floor tom, which can be on 3-4 legs or suspended like mine. Then there are the low and high toms which are generally tuned a 3rd or a 4th apart. The bass drum is generally used as the stand for the low and high toms with the help of a tom arm, which is a tube of metal with some other shit on it to fit into a hole in the top of the bass drum and some crap to hold up the toms. You can have a rack for the toms and have as many as you want, but the less you have the more creative you become with your fills.

The flatter drum with some wires on the bottom is the snare. It can be used as an extra tom if you release the switch that controls the wires. It's on a stand.

Hi hats are the two cymbals stacked on top of each other on a separate pedal-controlled stand.

Cymbals can have their own stands or be on floor toms like mine.

Some pics to look at:
http://www.clavedesol.com.ar/mapex/...rn_pro_JAZZ.jpg
The cymbal is on the tom but the tom is not suspended

http://www.clavedesol.com.ar/mapex/...apexs6225xl.jpg
Better look at cymbal stands

http://www.feelmusic.fr/upload/876_gd.jpg
Suspended floor tom with cymbal, those are a bitch.

Some of the more knowleageable metaltabbers should correct me, it's 3 AM and I'm half asleep but doing this out of duty. And someone tell him about cymbals.

It's not about that, but anyone who comes in and follows stereotypes (hello fellow rockers) and doesn't know what else to compare themselves to (No Doubt), obviously doesn't have much background knowlege in metal and should listen to some of the most prominent and best artists in the genre first - and Immortal own my soul, I'd let thousands of angry terrorists with razor wire around their dicks do me in the ass one after the other just for the latest lineup of Immortal to get back together so I could see the fuckers play live. It's always best to know as much as you can about your music.

Who the fuck said that? That's reducing playing to twitching... I mean, some people are ace wankers, but that doesn't meant they would make great guitar players.

NZ: Gwen is hot, but I don't have a thing for older women. If I met her and she was like 15-18, I would hit on her, but she's too old now. I'm not negative towards No Doubt.

Didn't your mother ever teach that going that extra mile brings true satisfaction???

okay cool, but not a thing for older women? as long as they are under 30 (or a REALLY good 30 yo) then I am not fussy, for example Angelina Jolene, AND she listens to Morbid Angel

By the way, joeeee. My guess is, if you are going to be a drummer in a band and you don't know how to play drums, you should probably take a few years to learn how before you go jumping into a band. Just a suggestion...

Well, maybe he did theory before and has good sense of rhytm and time, then he can play basic crap like Metallica songs after a month or so. Don't forget that he could want to play nu metal or something, that's not too hard. It can be done even with bad technique, as long as he has the sense of time. Otherwise, yeah, playing drums takes a lot of passion and dedication and time.

NZ: Angelina Jolie is full of plastic! Fake lips and fake tits are baaaaaddd.

I don't care if she was one of the past members of Immortal, she's made of plastic. She probably sweats silicon and melts when things get a tad too hot and heavy.

Having a female singer doesn't make your sound any similar to the sound of an another band with a female singer. Nightwish, Lacuna Coil, Arch Enemy and Tourettes all have female singers and have nothing similar in the sound department.Nightwish are symphonic, LC are goth wannabe, Arch Enemy are melodic death and Tourettes are sucky nu metal with great death vocals performed by a woman. Your sound is not determined by the gender of your vocalist. If it's hard for you to describe your sound, imagine yourself with a male singer and how you would sound then.
