Messing with the EQ
I have been looking for a guide to this, does anyone know some basic guidelines or a link to a useful site, perhaps?
I have googled it to no avail.
Also, how would one achieve a metallic tone, like the guitars in Metallica - One?
I am using a bass through Cube-100 which has amp modeling options(Fender Bassman, Trace Elliot AH600SMX, Ampeg SVT, and others not worth mentioning).
EDIT: I have heard a similar tone in basses so I assume it is possible to achieve (mainly in Tool songs).

Well, the best thing to do is to just mess with the sliders and see which sound you like the most. With a Metallica type of tone, just crank up the low end and cut down the mids and all.

Just play with ' shapes', f.i: / or \ or pointing up or downwards etc.
When you get the basic sound your looking for, adjust and tweak the individual sliders.

Yeah, this doesn't work for everyone, but a "V" shape usually gets you a chunky, heavy sound.

Its a graphic eq.. an eq that you can SEE. You see what you cutting and boosting. Your not just turning knobs.

Hmmm...my shitty Randall amp has a Mid and a Contour knob... turning the contour lower is like scooping the mids...
I have my contour around 2-3
The actual mid control is on about 7
Does that count as scooping?

that probably just makes the mid level.
The contour is canceling the boosted mids. So your back at 5 about.

ok then...but i'm not setting them back to 5 'cause i'm at a tone I actually really love out of this thing.
Yeah I call it shitty and make fun of it all the time but I actually love it sometimes.
I'd also like to admit I'm a moron and that I just figured out that no, you dont have to have your gain at 10 to get a good metal tone!
*kicks self*
I dont like completely scooped mids, but a bit of a dip does offer some punch...

i think you missed something.. he wasnt telling you to turn your mids to 5... he was saying the high mid levels are compensating for the low contour levels and would be considered about "5" if it were just one knob.
some amps need the gain to 10, some don't...
i like the bite and aggressiveness of scooped mids, but i don't like having no cutting power and "tone", plus scooped distortions are very muddy and it sounds like there is a hole in your tone.

What I'm looking for isn't cutting the mids.
Just listen to the intro to Forty Six & 2 by Tool. That's about it.
I tried a little bit of chorus and reverb and it sounded better but it still needs some adjustment.

Well, I'm happy where my mids are now, at about five..so it's equal >_>
