Heel up - Pedal Tension

Hi,

I'm relatively new to the high speed double pedalling fraternity.

Basically, at the moment I'm a heel-downer and I cant reach the speed and intensity that I'd like (as well as my shins being really sore) and I know that heel-up is probably the way to go.

So, here are my questions:

-When you say heel up, where exactly is your heel, parallel to your toes? or higher?
-What tension is best? Very high tension?
-Should your thighs be parallel to the ground, or does it matter?
-Are your toes - close to the pedals? close to the back of the pedals? or in the middle?
-And any other advice? I'm using a standard Pearl double pedal//

You have found the right man to answer your questions. I also went through what you are about to go through. I switched from heel down to heel up last summer. It was pretty frustrating at first but its alot easier for me to do now. I will answer your questions in order
1. Heel up is just basicly saying your heel isnt resting on the pedal board. When i play, my heels are about parallel to my toes, but you can play with your heels a little higher. Usually when my beater makes contact with the bass drum head, my heels are touching the pedal.

2. Tension is more of a personal preference. I would suggest raising it all the way up when you first start playing heel up then you can lower it to whatever you want when you get it down. Mines about half way to all the way up.

3. Your thighs should be just about parallel to the floor. Or a few inches higher. Just dont sit to high or low and you will be fine. I sit a little higher than parallel.

4. It depends what volume you want as to where you place your foot on the pedal. If you are playing quieter, place your toes as far up as you can go. If you are playing louder and fast, i would say about half way down the pedal. Just experament with the different placements.

5. I dont think i have any other advice. Just follow what i said and you should be fine. Well, when i first started playing heel up, i kept saying to myself "I must be doing something wrong." I could never pull off a little triplet heel up when i first started. It was realy hard to play fast so i thought it couldnt be done when playing heel up. It must have just been me getting use to it because i can play fine now. So, it may be a little hard to get used to at first but, it works. Good luck.

yeah what he said mostly except for one more thing:

I play Heel up with my toes covering the Axis logo on my pedals for normal playing, when I want to play faster, I slide my toes down about 2 inches or so, so I can see the axis logo this gives me speeed and power but I sacrifice control (fortunatley my legs go into 'autopilot' so my fast stuff is clean)

as for the Double kisk you are using, the Standard pearl ones the TW-100 I believe is a VERY good pedal for its price etc. But longboards are better.

I can actually go faster with heels down on the pedals. It may not be as loud, but its plenty powerful and I just find it to be easier. Imagine when you get jittery and start bouncing your heels. Well, all you have to do is bounce the front part of your foot instead. Not only is it more comfrotable, but you can kick the next beat in faster time than it would take to lift your foot and bring it down.
But, hell, maybe that just works for me.

NZ black metal drumm -
I use Axis longboards too. When I go fast, I keep my toes about half way over the logo, so you can see the top half. You said that you can see the whole logo when you blast, so I have to ask you- Where 'bouts do you have your variable slider positioned?

I didn't get the Varible adjuster, I just got the standard one, they were on sale, and the AA would have been $400 more for a variable cam and sonic hammers.....

NAH! I aint that rich.

I was wondering about that.
The variable ones are the same if you have the setting all the way out.
If you move the setting in, the pedals are harder to push, but they take less travel to make the beater strike the skin.
Anyway. I was just wondering.
