Guitar Picks
...Why do you use them? I know it sounds silly, but I just don't see the need? it just gets in the way for me...

can you imagine playing a 15 minute black metal song, or any other genre for that matter, entirely made of tremolo notes (usually the foundation of black metal music), and not using a pick? you'd melt your fingernails you clown.

Dude....are you serious? You're actually explaining why? I'm just gonna ask this here and I feel just as stupid asking this but since we're talking about picks, on Opeth's "Benighted", is he finger picking that acoustic part?

i knew a guy who played electric guitar without a pick, he was actually fucking sick! He could play pretty fast as well and his metal riffing was ace i must say!
Personally, not for me thanks, give me my trusted pick!

Don't think your better just because you don't use a pick. Deep down inside I know that's what you're thinking.

i dunno, they didn't play it when i saw them, but from what i can hear, it sounds like one (most likely mike) is using his fingers, and the other (most likely peter) is using a pick. don't hold me to it though.

there are some absolutely fantastical players who do not use picks. like the karate kid, he can shred as fast as steve via with his fingers.
jeff beck also kicks arse without a pick.
but speed picking power chords would be very difficult.
if your just down picking should be alright though.

I actually don't use a pick, I use my fingers. Well, sometimes I use a pick, but it's actually a toothpick, so I don't think that counts.
The fastest song I can play with a toothpick is either 'Imperial Doom' by Monstrosity or 'Altar of Sacrifice' by Slayer, I'm really not sure which one is faster off the top of my head, I think both are somewhere past 210bpm. The fastest song I can play with my fingers is Skip to My Lou, by Folk Song. Try shredding on that, motherfuckers.

The 'Karate Kid'/'Eugene' is not actually playing Eugene's Trick Bag in Crossroads. Steve Vai is the one who played it, I can tell because I know how to play it, and he isn't hitting the correct notes. I don'y know about any of the other jams.

Alot of blues players don't use picks, as well as bluegrass and other really talented musicians.
But as for not using them at all? Bullshit. It would be impossible to hit sixteenth notes without a pick.

Jesus, I asked you guys a question I was serious about, considering I'M NEW TO GUITAR. Stop bashing people about things they don't know much about, if you expect to get any respect.

As for your question, I use a pick when playing with distortion because in my oponion the distortion sounds better, sharper. The reson to use a pick is that you'll be able to tremolo real fast and accurate with a pick. You could do it with your fingers, but you'll strain them in no time when playing realy melodic and fast songs. Try galloping at 220Bpm with your fingers o.O When I play clean, it depends on the song if I play with or without one, the clean parts of immortal songs I play with a pick for example. Hope it helps.
