Celtic Frost / Venom / Bathory -setup

Anyone knows what equipment they used? Also the sound of Darkthrone on "Panzerfaust" sounds really similar to Celtic Frost.. so DT should have used the same pedal-stuff. Quorthon used a Ibanez destroyer all the time with Di marzio Picks i think but what else? Someone must know something about amps, pedals, pickups, etc. ..hopefully. Thanks

Oh sure, i have an ass full of money. want some? No.. Venom & Bathory are just for interest. CF i would probably buy for having "authentic" sound for doing covers from CF or DT... i don't want to have clone sound for my band..

i really would love to get darkthrones tone on panzerfaust. i was literally just going to make a thread about this. the tone is an exact replication of celtic frosts "to mega therion." definitley tube amps with no treble

yeah i think they all used old marshall amps like the JCM 800.. but what effect pedal they used would come closer to their sound ^^ ...does the proco rat sound like CF- what do you think? the ibanez tube screamer is more for 'de mysteriis...' -like sounds from mayhem. i have no idea, i don't know this old pedals very much.

even if you did know what type of pedals, you could never find the exact settings they use. bands also use different settings onstage compared to the album's sound.

i shouldn't be too hard to get really near to the original sound if you have the right pedal and 'try around' with it. i don't think DT asked CF for the exact settings..

if they even ue the same gear in the studio... you'd suprised how many of your favorite band's awesome tone on their cd's were just programed off of amp farm(protools).

some really high end studios also have a few botique amps to rent.

not saying they did... but you'd be suprised how many people do, and get amazing results that could fool many audiophiles.

Don't forget that they are usualy recording the sound in an ideal room full of sound dampening material with specific mic placement. Replicating an album's tone by trying to buy the exact gear is just dumb, becaue of the above stated plus mastering and hardcore eqing that is done.

basically:

1.not all rooms sound the same... your bedroom or band space probably wont be the same as the one they recorded in. whether it's a fucking garage or heavily dampend closet.

2. mic's and mixers, as well as everything else the signal is running through.. is going to drastically change you sound no matter how high or low the quality of the equipment is.

3. your technique is probably a great deal different from theirs, and a huge part of someone's "tone" is in their technique.

4. not all amps, guitars, pickups, strings, pedals, ect are created equal.

Tom Warrior used his bolt on Black Ibanez Iceman(dunno if stock pups), Marshall 2203 head, Ibanez Tube Screamer, and Marshall 4x12 cabinets from Hell Hammer through all of CF.

Mantis of Venom used Marshall 1959 heads which were probably modded from hell on the first two albums. I dont know about anything afterwards. guitars he used a slew of different ones.

Quorthon used quite a few different guitars on all of his albums. For amps he used a Yamaha 25 watt combo on the first three albums. Marshalls starting on Blood Fire Death. The "studio" on the first three albums was a garage that was first used as a coal storage building for the houses that were in the area. Blood Fire Death and afterward was recorded in a real studio.

For some of Darkthrone's stuff I think they went direct from distortion box into the mixing board. I tried replicating some of the tones off Under a Funeral Moon and Transylvanian Hunger and this was the only way I could get that over saturated hollow sound. Quite possibly a Boss Heavy Metal pedal, but some sounds like a Big Muff.

Someone mentioned Mayhem. Euronymous used his Lester Standard into a Boss Heavy Metal pedal (HM-2 I think) then into a Marshall 70's era 1959 head. then into a Marshall 4x12.
