bass lines for black metal
hey out of curiosity what would u guys recommend for a bass line for a black metal song (its very darkthroneish ) i was thinking of something that kinda combinds the the snare and guitar riff into it but seeing has the song is very "trad" i wasnt too sure on whether to just tremolo behind the guitar riffs (i know very boring) or go for something that is different and brings the bass line into a more important role
any ideas

Moin,
Some years ago I was in a Black Metal band, more Covenant - In Times before the Light style. Well, we had the same problem, and we came to the solution, that the bass plays the melody, and the guitar the harmonies. So acctually the bass took over the lead guitar part. So that could be one way to use the bass in black metal projects.
But I guess the best way to find out what suits you best is just to play the songs you have already made with your band and then the bass player tries to enhance the bass part the way he wants to.
Cheers

Ive never really played a lot of BM just listen to some decent death/black/thrash metal bands bassists and listen to the licks they use, it might give you some idea's on what too use.

I tried to create some basslines for my brother's blackmetal band because their bassist was complete new in playing bass. I tried to convert the guitarnotes to bassnotes, but so I got a very powerful sound of the bass guitar. The band didn't liked it and now they are playing without any bass.

I know these are 'conventional' black metal bands, but listen to Borknagar and Vintersorg. Especially Vintersorg, the great Steve DiGorgio plays for them. They often have the bass playing something that no guitar is playing, and that's good. I'm not saying it is bad if the bass follows the rhythm guitar, but I do think it is bad if the bass does it too often.

I say do away with it. You can always stand in its former location if you need to make use of the perspective it gave you, but will benefit from the ability to situate yourself in different loci with ease.
Destroy the box.
