The mode four is a horrid amp. I see no useful purposes of such amp.

I've played it and I didn't like it much, to each his own though..

I don't know how much MF's go for in the UK? but I bet you could get a kickass tube amp for the same ammount of money.

I played it and I didn't see anything so special about it. 350 watts and "An amp capable of more gain, more low-end...", but it didn't seem so brutal sounding to me.

I say all marshall heads are a waste of hard earned cash, there are much better amps out there, you just gotta look.

Mode Four is straight up terrible. nothing else about it. for the same money? shit

Peavey 5150
Peavey 5150 II
Peavey XXX
Crate Blue Voodoo
other Marshalls that ARENT solid state
Soldano Avenger
Engl Powerball
Engl Fireball
Framus Dragon
Framus Cobra

and thats all new stuff. shit, used, you could get some amazing stuff for $1,500. trust me, DO NOT BUY THE MODE FOUR

EDIT: i just realized that you're in the UK, and all of my comparisons are based on US prices, but im pretty sure that its all still fairly accurate

how much money do u have to spend? because the 5150 is fairly expensive in england (around £850+, ) mainly because its not a british manufacturer. If ure looking for something cheaper maybe try the marshall jcm 2000 tsl, its pretty sweet, and about £250 cheaper. Theres also some laney's which are pretty good like the vh100r.

If you're after a solid state, I would look at a Crate GT350 head( I'm a solid-state person myself ) or something from the Randall line. Said amplifiers cost much less and are much better in my opinion. I myself would'nt spend that much money for the Mode 4, I myself, I don't think it is worth it.

If you're after a tube amplifier, the other poster who suggested Engls, Framuses, and Peavey, has already chosen the ones you should browse. You cannot go wrong with those.

maybe try the dsl 100, although that has a shared eq, so the clean might sound shitty, i also heard it wasnt very metal sounding but then again i never played it on the od channel

i'm a toss up with s.s. and tube... both equally good when you do it right.

if you want a high wattage s.s. head that will beat the shit out of a mode four, for a much better price... look no further than the tech 21 trademark 300.

personally i wouldnt say the mode four is bad, i can get good tones from them, but fuck, $1,200 for an over glorified avt????? you must be crazy.

not to mention, realiability, i have a shitload of friends all at the local guitar center... they say the mode four is the most often returned head, whether it's because they realized they werent getting enough amp for their buck or the fucking hunk of shit broke.

my buddy used to have one, it broke, he got it fixed, it broke again, he traded it for a new one, it broke, he traded it in for a new one and sold it before it could break. then when back to the dual recto.

you've been warned.

Well, to put it simply : I'll sit in a music store, and plugging in and out of a 5150, JSX head, XXX, Genz Benz, Marshall JCM, Crate GT350H, end up favoring the Crate.
