Hey i have a 5150 head and im thinking of buying a custom ran guitar. I have the choice to either get emg or seymour duncan pickups. Which humbuckers would you recommend i get in the bridge and neck?

It really depends on what sound you are going for. If it was me....I would get a EMG 81 in the bridge, and a EMG 60A in the neck....but that is just IMO

Yeah, it's really gonna depend on what kinda tone you want. The type of guitar and everything also makes a difference. IMO, I like the EMG 85/81 combination.

The EMG 85/81 combination is often used in guitars for people wanting to play mostly metal, whilst the sd jb and jazz are very versatile and good at a whole host of other tones

If its going to be a nice guitar with good woods, i'd suggest jb/'59 or jb/jazz combo. Otherwise, just get the EMG's.

EMG 81/60, if you want cleaner tones, or 81/81 or 85/81, or JB and 59, or dimebucker and 59.

I would not get an 81/60a combo as the 60 was designed to go with the 85 or an alnico magent pickup in the bridge.

Cheers, I was thinking EMG 85/81's, but I heard that they would override the natural tones of the wood, and wouldn't compliment them.

Put out more what?

EMG's actually put out a very low signal which is then amplified by the onboard preamp. So no, they are not high gain.

Instead of the Dimebucker get the Bill Lawrence XL-500 it the pickup Dime used for 10+ years, and its only $50 http://www.billlawrence.com/

The X2N is nice as well...

and get a real pickup for the neck. Jazz or 59 come to mind.

i hope passives are cheaper than actives, i just paid £85 for just one emg 81 pickup!!! thats US$158 and CAD$195 :O! all that just for 1 active pickup, i now have to save up for the emg 85 pickup which is also gonna cost £85, so in total my pickup set will cost: £170 or US$316 or CAD$390...

i wish i lived in america, emg take the piss in england, its almost double the price

just buy them from america...they're tiny so shipping isnt going to be too huge of a pain.

i would have its just that no1 would accept paypal from non-us buyers, and they wanted money though the post which is really really unreliable and is most likely to go missing.

ah well

i might try and get the 85 from america...its only £60
