Floyd Rose Tremolos

From the Floyd Rose web site.

"If your tremolo is "floating" (i.e. you can pull up or push down on the tremolo arm) and you bend a string, the other strings will go slightly flat. This is normal operation. If you don't want this to happen you must block the tremolo so that you can't pull up on it (Edward Van Halen uses his Floyd blocked this way). When the bridge is mounted in this manner it is as stable as a fixed bridge for string bending but the trade off is the loss of subtle vibrato effects. This blocking should be done by a qualified guitar repairman."

Normal operation? Did anyone else know this? I wondered why my shit kept going out of tune.

i knew this from five minits of owning one. and i rang up ibanez and complained, and they said yeah? so what? its meant to do that?.

i was told, that wilkinson(strat trems) developed a system to stop this, but refused to allow floyd rose to use it.

this only affects stuff when you play two notes at the same time, and one is bent. i just learned to bend the other note a little to keep it steady.

and thats bullshit about blocking should be done by a pro, you can do it with jenga blocks.

but why would you want to spend extra money on a floyd and then disable it?

Yep I noticed it too, I do like Amon Ra when there are several notes being bent.

try setting them up decently?

i dont have floyd rose's but i have the equivalent by schaller, kahler spyder and a fender system one bridge and they stay in tune as any tune-o-matic bridge would....just make sure the locking nuts at the top of the neck and at the bridge are tight!

That is just one of the inherited drawbacks of a floating bridge. They all have this problem but it isn't noticable on some bridges that are set up right.

You just have to bend a little bit more. Or, if your getting two notes, to put your hand on the bridge a little to make it sharp.

I have a Floyd Rose copy! Is there any way to make it better so it will not get out of tune etc.?

If it's a copy or even a licensed Floyd rose, it generally won't be as good as the Floyd original because of the lesser production quality (of course, there are certain licensed Floyds that still come very close). If you want it to be as accurate as possible, you can take it to a guitar shop and have them set it up for your string gauge preference, tuning, etc. But if you're smart you can also do these things yourself. www.floydrose.com has complete setup instructions for Floyd-style tremolos.
